Pioneer Kuro plasmas better than 4k tv's?

I haven't been in the electronics scene since 2012. After we got the Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-151FD plasma we been set.

I was just wondering if the Pioneer Kuro plasmas are still king in picture quality and black levels or have they been surpassed by the new 4K tv's? Am I missing something?

I went into a Sears yesterday and saw a curved Samsung 4k Ultra HD and it looked nice, nice PQ, nothing that looked any better than my Pioneer. I thought the 4k tv was very sharp and overly digitized where as the Pioneer plasma was more natural and realistic and less eye strain.

Panasonic have gotten insanely close

I think only the Panasonic Plasma tops it but that's mainly because of the 3D support and that's only taking into account 1080p TV's. I still have my Kuro and use it as my main TV, I won't upgrade until the blacks are beat and the whites for that matter.

I prefer the 'look' of plasma over LED tv's....doesn't matter if they're 4k or not.

Same reasons folks love their OPPO players, or PS4, or BMWs or insert your die hard favorite brand here.

Perceived (real or otherwise) superiority over other brands.

Get some rave reviews from the highend community and you are off and running.

Search for groupthink and you now know how forums work.

LCDs still suck as much as ever, but plasma's got nothing on OLED panels black level wise, though apparently they have their own problems. I haven't done too much research on them, since I'm holding off on anything 4K until the early adopters work out all the bugs for me.

All formats are far from perfect, but I would take a 4k plamsa anyday

you have your reference (Pioneer Elite Kuro); i expect that it would be quiet easy for you, given your ownership of the 'Kuro'

i do not think that anyone but yourself should answer your question

the Panasonic will most likely be unavailable unless you know someone with one

the Vizio is limited arability to custom installers, with exception (Best Buy - Magnolia - design centers that do custom installation - few, but available)

The 1080P Pioneer plasmas from 2008 were the best plasmas that were made. They outperform all other 4K flat panels except for OLED displays. The Pioneer plasmas at 72Hz still outperform the best OLED flat panels in terms of motion, however the OLED displays have absolute black levels like the best CRT’s.

If you havea a native 4K Blu-ray player connected to a 4K OLED in general it will look better then the Pioneer plasmas in terms of resolution and deeper black levels.

If you owned a Kuro, and everyone left the room, you could decide for yourself.


But you don't own one. It appears you're giving a shot at "groupthink" for people who never saw one. It's a pretty big group. Maybe you feel warmer in it, while you cheer for Vizio.

AS AN OWNER...of practically all the most popular display formats - I've owned the top-of-the-line Panny 65ZT60, I still own a 5020 Kuro, I've had an Epson 5030 projector/Sony VPL40 - and had a 47" Philips LCD and now own a 65" Samsung LEDLCD JS8500 (4K)...

That's technically not possible, which partially explains why plasma is dead. OLED is king of the hill now.

I love my Kuro TV as well, I plan to keep it along with a nice assortment of BDs that look great on it for as long as it lasts. The contrast ratio superiority is no placebo. Having said that, love my current sony x850c, as well, its contrast ratio is not as nice as the Kuro but UHDs look great on it to me nonetheless.

Well resolution isn't the most aspect for PQ. It's actually last.













None of the 4K LCD's, nor OLED, i've seen have the kuros natural organic texture. Plasmas just feel and look smoother. Combine that with it's amazing MLL, motion, uniform picture and accurate color, you can see why most owners are not ready to replace it.

Just having 4K is not enough though. The kuro still has better near black details, uniformity, motion, and color.


OLED looks great but it still needs some work.

The kuro still has the most beautiful image to date... 8gen plasma tech from pioneer is legendary. Still being used as the benchmark says something for sure... Just think what their tech would be as of today... No contest...
