Default Seiki SR4KP1 All Region Blu-ray Player - $66.49 at Kmart/Sears

The Seiki U-Vision (SR4KP1) all region blu-ray player is currently on sale at Kmart/Sears for $66.49.

It is the same price on Amazon, though currently out of stock. This player is modifiable to all region with a simple code entry from the supplied remote.

I have a number of region locked titles and have been waiting to buy a region free player. My understanding was that region modifications that are done via hardware are the way to go as ones such as this could be "corrected" via a simple online update.

Could someone explain if this is not the case with this and if so why?

Seiki has never issued any firmware updates for any of their blu-ray players to date, so you won't have to worry about the region free capability being extinguished. However, some have reported that their first model (BD660) will not play some newer titles. I have both the previous model (SR212S) and both play everything so far.

Even if they did put together some kind of player-killing firmware update you'd have to go out of your way to perform it with the lack of Wi-Fi/apps, it's nothing that would hit you by surprise.

I actually bought this player for 2 reasons. 1 of them being the Region Free capability.

It's actually not available now through either Sears or Kmart (links are in the OP), and is going for $85 or more on the reseller market.
