Well, a while back the price of copper hit 1.5 cents per penny, and it's shot up since then. But up here in Canada they started putting a lot of other metal mixed in with the pennies, making them much lighter in weight and colour, and presumably cheaper. Not sure if the USA does that too?

The alloy remained 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc until 1982, when the composition was changed to 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper (copper-plated zinc). Cents of both compositions appeared in that year.

Ahhh copper plated, that makes sense... I've noticed some American coins when they get old wear down on the edges and you can see a different color inside (especially quarters, which probably wear down faster due to being used in various change machines)....
