Default Need opinion. Looking for good storage option for blu-rays

I'm trying to reduce the space my blu-rays take up and I am looking at different options of storing them.

I currently use Amazon or caselogic wallets to store my dvds but do not want to put blu-rays in them. I believe that my blu-rays, being more sensitive to damage, will more likely to become non-functional if I store them in wallets. This is due to the likeliness they will often lie horizontally allowing pressure and friction to damage them.

I was wondering would something like this storage case could be a better option?

Buy a few 10-disc BD cases, and print out some custom covers for them using the categorization of your choice (e.g. genres). It should save on space and be safer than sleeves

Alternatively this 6 disc one that's considerably thinner

This is what I do, it has saved a ton of space.

At ContainerStore, check out the HiDef Pro sleeves by Disc Sox. Ignore the plastic tray they also sell, just pick up a set of the sleeves to try out. Be sure it is the HiDef Pro sleeves, since they also sell a couple other kinds.

Because narrow sleeves make it difficult to read the spines, I also use a set of alphabetical dividers I picked up on Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/JUMBL-trade-03...dp/B0006VSTU6/

And to make sure that the sleeves on the very ends of the shelf don't slip down through the crack to the next shelf down, I also put some plain bookends on both edges (which I also got at Comtainer Store).

A lot of effort actually, but it came out well.

Blurays are less likely to scratch than DVDs.

I used to have a small spare bedroom to hold all my DVD's and blu's but that recently filled so I ended up taking all the discs out of the cases and sleeving the discs on a shelf. I do still have two wall units left for my packaged TV show discs and box sets, but the majority of my 5000 disc collection fits on one 4'x8' shelving unit with plenty of space to spare. I use Collectorz Movie Collector software to track them and packed all the cases up in the attic.

You lost me at "Blu-rays, being more sensitive to damage..."

Especially since the comparison is to DVDs.

I use these 100 micron sleeves with flap, $17 for 500:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321117874193...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I messed up and bought a whole bunch of 60 micron ones but they were too flappy on the corners. The 100's are much more rigid.

Wow, those are sweet. Too expensive for me though . It killed me to pack up all my cases in the attic.

I get that you're trying to save space by putting these in sleeves and I'd probably do the same if I had that many Blu-rays & DVDs, but part of the charm for me is having them on display with the covers and cases. If I ever come to a point where I'd even consider sleeves I'd know it was time to seriously downsize my collection.

Now I just keep my main blu-ray collection and what little DVDs I have left on shelves and having gotten rid of a lot of DVDs recently, that freed up shelve space considerably, both horizontally and vertically (DVDs being higher I can now place more shelves to house blu-rays).

All my blu-rays now go in 6mm thin cases. Saves 50% storage space and I rarely need to trim any artwork to fit the smaller cases (titles on the spines are even legible 95% of the time).

These are what I use (usually around $30 for 100 cases): http://www.amazon.com/PREMIUM-SLIM-B.../dp/B003628DOE

Here's a crappy picture of them lined up on a shelf.

The Amaray cases represent the number of discs that can comfortably be stored in the ring binder, to give you an idea of how much shelf space is saved.

I got them from here - it's a UK company, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a US equivalent.

I haven't started on the BDs yet, but I've been so happy with the results with the DVDs that it's definitely sooner rather than later.

How is the quality on those? Have you ever had to fold a spine in half (like if the sleeve wasn't wide enough for the front and the whole spine)? Have you noticed any scratches taking them in and out?

I looked at that site, but the pictures are kind of small to get a good feel for them.

Pretty much this. Not many people are willing to openly display a big collection of movies in their home for whatever reason. I know a number of people who think movie displays are tacky, while they have no similar disregard for a shelf full of books. Let's face it, very few people consider things like blu rays as more than a move on a disc. This is a hobbyist's forum so of course many folks here have a bit of an admiration for packaging and other elements that go beyond a disc to pop into a player.

But back on topic, there are certainly a lot of options. You could find bins to slide under the bed for storage. Any old dvds of the same titles could be combined into a 2 or more disc blu case. And of course you can combine similar movies into the same multi disc case if you like. I've never really cared for binders, but they do definitely save a whole lot of space provided ones now can store the art without damaging it.

Thanks for the pic. I will look into these. I have been combining mine into 2,3,5 disc cases, the slims would save a lot on ink from printing new artwork too and buying new multiple capacity cases. Though two of the slims seem to equal one standard case, not sure if that would free up enough space for me.

Right. I would never go to the height of trimming the artwork or buying 6 disc cases to house random titles in together. That, for me, loses a bit of the collectors aspect for me, but I do understand needing logical storage, I just wouldn't ever think of doing that.

Great thread. Glad I found this.

I want to keep all of my Blu's in the Blu cases since I really like the way they look aesthetically, and since they honestly don't take up as much room on the shelf as DVD cases - they're much more compact.

But, I completely agree with the idea of getting rid of DVD cases & instead storing the DVD's. DVD cases are large, take up too much room, and are, in general, ugly. So, I've started to get rid of some DVD cases (by recycling them), and instead put the DVD's in the much smaller & more compact empty CD cases. This takes up a lot less room & still protects the DVD.
