Question good or bad? (360 & PS3 rather than Sony bdps-1)

I think I'm going to get a xbox 360 and a PS 3 instead of the bdps-1 what do you think?

It's certainly the cheapest way to get both players. It may be hard to get both depending on how many really get released.

I'm intending to sell my Toshiba HD-A1 once I get the 360 strap-on since I'm just renting HD DVD discs. If the format takes off long term then I'll get a better player when the prices drop down far more.

Just remember that if the copy protection token is enabled. You won't get high-def video to play through the Xbox 360 component cables (you need HDMI to not be affected). Basically, you could be wasting $200 on the Xbox 360 strap-on.

Safest way out of town.

If you're a gamer anyways, why not use the game consoles as stop gaps until the format war is over, or at least until 2-3 gen standalones.

The more I look at this thing, the more I think I'm going to back to this original plan myself.

There's still all kinds of talk and speculation about the Xbox360 HD-DVD situation. Bottom line: They have to make it all work somehow.

The PS3 is a no brainer on the BD and gaming end. That speaks for itself.

My only major problem with gaming consoles is there is no option for next gen audio aside from HDMI 1.3 & I don't want to have to buy all new audio equipment. So if your cool with lossy codecs, it's a bargain...otherwise i'd say swoop an HD-A1 while you can get in at the firesale prices.

I personally decided since I have two hometheatre setups in my home that both setups would have both HDDVD & BD.

My master bedroom will play host to BDP-S1 & my 360 w/add on drive.

My Living room will play host to HD-A1 & the ps3.

I connected up my HD-A1 to my receiver downstairs via 6channel analog and have already run the 6channel analog cables on the other setup in anticipation of the sony.

I can live without lossless audio in a "backup" or secondary situation, but I need to be able to experience the full situation If I need to show out a friend or something bragging about his "DoP3 H0m3tHe@tR3 sEtuP y0!

from reports i've read the 360 add on performs equally to the HD-A1 pq wise, and is allegedly faster to boot!

^^ That's a lot of extra effort and $$$ just to be able to play Universal discs short term.

Just take it slow, cautious, and easy.

If you haven't already, you might want to try the 360 in a home theater environment before you buy it. The thing is blowing a lot or air when the cpu is working hard (adaptative fan), the noise is ok for a video game but IMO unacceptable while watching a movie. Because it's the 360 doing all the decoding work, it certainly will speed up the fan when playing HDDVDs.

i've been back and forth on getting the sony bdp for awhile. at this point, it's going to be the ps3 and just deal with the lossy codecs until i either have a 1.3 receiver or a standalone player.
