At the yearly Ain't It Cool News Butt-Numb-a-Thon, a new 4K remastered version of Don Coscarelli's Phantasm was screened. The new master was done off the original camera negative by, of all companies, J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot -- the character of Captain Phasma in the new Star Wars movie is named in tribute to Phantasm.

Cool news. A box set would of course be awesome, depending if all the rights ended up in the same place. Maybe they would deliver a better edition of part II as well, since Shout's video leaves a lot to be desired.

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure Universal still retains the rights to the 2nd movie here in the US. I wouldn't bank on them giving Shout or anyone else a new transfer. If we do get a box set, it will likely reuse the existing master.

That's such a shame. I would love to see a proper restoration of part 2 with all the unrated footage reinserted into the movie.

Since this is just speculation, it really belongs in the wish list section.

"Quint over at Ain't It Cool News has one hell of a scoop - that JJ Abrams's Bad Robot has been secretly performing a 4k restoration on the original Phantasm! Not only that, this bad boy is being restored from the original camera negative, which we've long understood Don Coscarelli to have spirited away in a vault somewhere. Quint also mentions that new Ravager footage has been screened at the site's annual BNAT event (do look up that acronym if you don't know it!) That Abrams is involved is not that much of a surprise, mind you. He named a character in his upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens after Phantasm and cast Angus Scrimm in a recurring role on Alias some years ago. The guy is an admitted phan. The AICN article continues, "Coscarelli has been hard at work producing a fifth Phantasm Installment (called Ravager), but word around the campfire is he had to put it on hold to focus on this restoration (which is why it's not in your living rooms just yet)." Uh... Quint and I are apparently sitting around different Phantasm Ravager campfires. The article closes out with two gorgeous screenshots from the new transfer. Feast your eyes upon them below!" |

Too bad many reported that the video quality of the Phantasm II blu-ray sucked... I wasn't expecting more from Universal.

The scoop with Phantasm is that they are with the director who wants Image to distribute them. They want to do a box set with all of them are negotiating with Universal for Part II to be included
Both Phantasm threads should be in the wishlist section since nothings been announced and probably wont be for awhile yet. |

Hopefully new transfer, but I doubt it. Universal is the worst company around.

I heard from a really reliable source a few weeks ago that they were working on a box set. But I didn't want to start any rumours.

I "wish" that the thing about Coscarelli wanting Image to release a box set is just a rumor. Image is a trash label, not even a shadow of their former selves. Even when they were releasing DVDs the quality was always subpar. It's like Cheezy Flix or Alpha Video acquiring the rights to the Star Wars franchise. Why would Coscarelli want to entrust a beloved series like Phantasm to a company that obviously has no interest in movies other than just acquiring libraries to add to their portfolio?

To all those saying this should be in "Wish Lists": Give it a week. I think we're going to start seeing interviews with Coscarelli and have an idea where this is going very soon.
