Some of my organization categories will occasionally clash. For instance I organize by "director", but I also organize by "complete franchise". Which has caused me trouble a couple times. For instance I have the Halloween Collection, which I keep in the Franchise section of my collection. However, I also have a John Carpenter section. So I have a film that needs to be in 2 places at once. Now usually I adios a dvd once I get the blu ray, but in this instance I have kept it, even though I will never use it again, just so I can keep it on the shelf with my other Carpenter titles.
It gets worse. I used to own the Legacy Series dvd of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. When the Blu Ray steelbook came out, I sold the dvd and put the steelbook blu in line with the rest of my Hitchcock. Now heres where my problem starts. Soon after that, SHOUT, announced they would be releasing Psycho 2,3 (and eventually 4). So here I am again with a movie that needs to be in 2 homes. Hitchcock and Franchise. Now instead of leaving it be like any normal person would, not only did I go out and rebuy the Legacy Series dvd that I sold, but I bought it knowing full well that it would just sit on my shelf, never to be viewed again , just so I didn't have Psycho 2,3,4 sitting on my shelf looking out of place. Anyhow, thats just one of my many quirks. What are yours? |

I can't understand those organizational styles. Arranging alphabetically will NEVER cause any of these issues. So many genres are mix & match causing numerous headaches.

LOL. That is one good thing about double dipping. You can have one release under one section and the other under another. For example, I'm a huge fan of both Robert De Niro as well as Al Pacino. And with Heat, I was torn up about which of the two I should add it under. So in a way if I was thrilled when another release came out so that I could have two and categorize one under each of the two actors, which you can see if you click on my collection.
As for Psycho, can't you just have Hitchcock's Psycho ending the Hitchcock section and have the remaining ones coming on the shelf right after that? But if you have to pick one, surely the Hitchcock name and the first Psycho outweigh the sequels. It will only get more complicated if they release Gus Van Sant's remake. ![]() |

I have always put movies that start with "A" with the A's and "The" with the T's, I know it's not grammatically correct but in my mind, those are part of the title and so when I think of the movie, I would look there first so that's how I have my collection.
I don't care who the director of a movie is, and I already know the genre of the movie because I've seen it at least once... so everything's in alphabetical order except for sequels, those are with the franchise and put in chronological order, even if the first starts with A and 2nd starts with a Z or vice versa. I also have Marvel Cinematic Universe under the M's so I can keep them in order even though they're not direct sequels of each other but are connected. I have Studio Ghibli in chronological order as well, but that was more because if I wanted to watch them in order again once they're all out then I wouldn't have to look it up again. Other than that, I recently removed every DVD from my collection, unless it was a sequel that has a Blu-ray release of the original or there is a BD release available and I'm just using it as a placeholder until I actually get the BD. I also put my TV on BD separate from my TV on DVD but that's mostly due to shelf space. Last edited by kevin87; 09-19-2016 at 08:17 AM. |

Simple A-Z by title. No double dipping needed, and you can find the title you want within seconds

Pretty straight forward:
NEW MOVIE -> what genre is it ? Action. -> was it directed by either david lynch or jim jarmusch ? No. -> is it an italian police movie ? No. -> is it an hong kong bloodshed movie ? No. -> is it an yakuza action movie ? No. -> is it from korea ? Yes. -> part of the CJ Entertainment collection ? No. -> part of the Criterion Collection ? No. -> part of the Master of Cinema collection ? No. -> Well then easy peasy, just put it next to your other unspecified korean action movies which are located next to the yakuza movie sub-categorie of japanese genre flicks. |

![]() This issue has gotten a lot worse since i rearanged my shelves and I can't mix Dvd and BluRay anymore.. so some films by the same director stand a few shelves apart, which makes me nervous when I think about it too much. I also seperate by country (I have separate shelves for american/english language and foreign films). That cause issues. For example Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman" is in the space for chinese/taiwanese films... but I couldn't put my Criterion for the "Ice Storm" in there as well, that is just wrong. So I made a separate space just for "foreign directors that made english language films" ![]() Unhealthy behaviour is most apparent in my horror collection. I buy way too many 80ies horror films, even ones that I don't really like that much. I just love buying them on BluRay. I have pretty strict rules usually what enters my collection, but when it is 80ies horror all those rules fly out the window and I want to have it. Maybe it's because it was so hard to get them when I was a teen in Germany (they were usually banned or heavily censored). It also gives me the mom&pop videostore feeling to have all this stuff at hand, so I spend a lot of my monthly income on films that I might only find so-so. (how often am I gonna rewatch Nailgun Massacre???) It has gotten worse too over the years.. with Arrow and 88films making me weak with their beautiful covers and restorations. For the most part, you are correct. Although, this does cause a few annoyances when one looks at franchises. The Dark Knight, and Dark Knight Rises don't really fit well in alphabetical order. Neither does Man of Steel.

My unhealthy behavior is replacing the blue cases with clear cases. I just can't stand the look of the blue cases - that translucent blue just looks cheap and reminds me of blue recycling bags. So I've spent far too much on clear cases the last few months.

A-Z as a general rule. Blu-Ray and DVD mixed. Movies first, followed by TV shows/Documentaries
The exceptions are:

My biggest thing right now is split formats. So for example Divergent 1+3 are 2d but the 2nd one is 3d, so you have to go back and forth between shelves. Or 24 Seasons 1-6 are DVD but 7-9 are bluray. But other then that, I sort by genre and then similarity (for instance, in sci fi Star Wars then Star Trek) except for Disney and Marvel movies which go in order. Don't usually have too much of a problem.
The thing I like about genre sorting is you just be like, what type of movie do you feel like? And just instantly see the choices. |

I have quite a few, but I will try to explain some here.
My collection has to be in alphabetical order. If it's not then individual titles are harder to find for the rest of my family. I'd rather organize them by genre and series, but I have to keep everyone else happy. I can't stand for a release not to have a slipcover if it indeed received one during its release. The three in my signature are the ones I'd like to have the most. I hate it when a film is shot in 3D and does not receive a 3D release. I'm looking at you Disney. I hate when a disc has trailers or ads that you can't skip. It's beyond frustrating when you have to sit there and fast forward through 15 minutes of trailers. Luckily, this seems to be more common with rental discs. It's annoying when a title in a series gets a digibook or steelbook release and then another title in the series gets a standard release. It's also annoying when a title in a series receives a slipcover and then another title in the series does not. Those are my main beefs. If I think of anymore I will post them. I HATE alphabetical order. It puts franchises out of whack and places horrors next to Disney flicks...urgh.
Genre/sub-genre/age of title for the most part, though my war movies are organised by what war/battle they represent. |
