Default The Coast Guard - Ki-Duk Kim (1/17/2012)

Anyone else excited about this release? Though it's not my favorite in his catalogue, it's a prescient film amid current events. It's nice to see a high-def release. SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER...AND SPRING or 3-IRON would be top of my list on BD. I believe the latter is out in Korea on blu but rather expensive to import and I've never seen a review about disc quality.

Maybe we'll get THE ISLE on blu. Can you imagine the fish hook scene in all it's gruesome g(l)ory

I pre-ordered it a few months ago. Love the film, and it's a good one to watch back to back with JSA.

I like almost all of Kim Ki-Duk's films, but The Coast Guard would come pretty low on my list if I was ranking them. I suppose someone's law would say that it was always going to be the first to be released on Blu.

Still, at least there might be some hope for more of his films to get a Blu release.

I got it yesterday. I'm sorry to say that the PQ is SD material at best. Resolution is similar to an upscaled DVD and both color and contrast are poor. Audio is dts HD 5.1, but sound tinny with very little in terms of depth or surround.

The story revolves around gungho Marine played by Jang Dong-geon (Warrior's Way) who accidentally shoots and kills a local civilian who wander into a restricted military area. Although he is decorated and given early discharge for carrying out his duties, he is overcome by PTSD and has difficulty integrating back into civilian life. Second story revolves around a local girl who goes insane by the shooting of her fiance.

Even though the title is The Coast Guard and the cover shows what looks like prelude to the second Korean War, there is no such scenes from the movie. I don't even know where they got those images since there are no scenes with a warship or any airplanes in the movie. Kim actually wanted to make the soldiers Korean Marine Corps, but understandably the Marine Corps turned down his request for use of official uniform and insignia. Therefore the soldiers are indescript military unit guarding the coastal border with the North Korea, but certainly not the Coast Guard.

You pretty much nailed it on the head. I really want 3 Iron and SSFWS. The Isle would be a nice treat and don't forget about Address Unknown. Here's hoping more are on their way, with better quality it sounds like to. I'm still looking forward to revisiting The Coast Gaurd though. It should arrive in the early tommorrow.

Yeah that cover is pretty funny considering the film itself is a study of the psychological impact of service.

Just found a review with caps: seems god-awful indeed.

It's actually not nearly like how the caps look (those look horrible). The three dimension depth is surprisingly pretty good. The color is a bit drab looking, and while it could have been better it's pretty consistent with the way it's always looked on dvd and broadcast tv. The detail is better than the color; you get high definition level detail and it's not just a small step above a dvd upconvert, grain is perfectly visible. There are a couple of night scenes that have heavy grain and look lower in quality, but it seems like a film source thing and not a problem with the transfer to disk.

God that cover art is atrocious! Misleading as heck too, makes it look like a World War II movie when it ain't. Hate it when BDs ditch the original cover art, didn't really see that with VHS/DVD back in the day. Anyway, just got a re-release recently in Japan. Wonder if it's the same transfer or better. Reviews seemed to imply the bad PQ was due to the source materal.
