United Kingdom My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) (1988).

The blu-ray for one of the more popular films from Studio Ghibli, My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) (1988)—directed by Hayao Miyazaki—is now available for preorder for the UK market.

More information about the film is available at Blu-ray.com and IMDb.com.

Coming from Studio Canal, as part of its continuing Studio Ghibli series, the release date is currently listed at Amazon UK as Monday, November 12th, 2012.

Default Hey let's go! Hey let's go! I'm happy as can be...

Both of my kids grew up with the original 2002 dvd from (Fox) English dub track which has been completely abandoned by Disney for a new one created in 2010 for the remastered dvd release. Unfortunately, I hate this track--which I am guessing will not be included in the UK version (since this is not a Disney release). I could live with just the Japanese audio (subbed in English)--but I would be very happy if this includes the first American dub track produced.
Please be true!

The last UK DVD release used the Disney dub.

Looks as if Studio Canal is the go-to studio for all (western-friendly) things Studio Ghibli. Disney truly has been far too slow compared to the Studio Canal juggernaut. Studio Canal also generally has nicer packaging and stronger cover graphics. Just as I imported Arrietty and Howl's Moving Castle, I'll also import My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies, which was also announced today.

I haven't yet seen either of the last two. Ironically the preorder availability happened to start on the same day Totoro arrived from my Netflix queue (it had been added to the queue months ago as part of my own personal lineup of Studio Ghibli films). Talk about coincidence.

I hope Princess Mononoke (my favorite Ghibli title) and Spirited Away are not too far away. I could also use Only Yesterday.

Just last weekend, I watched Pom Poko, which is by far the funniest Ghibli film I've seen, though also slightly unnerving at times.

I second this, MONONOKE & SPIRITED AWAY are probably their most commercially successful films, here in the UK at least. ONLY YESTERDAY is one of only a few Ghibli's I haven't yet seen, what's it like? Is it more in the style of say Whisper of the Heart?

with this coming out in the UK next week i was wondering, is there any news regarding the region coding?
Not an issue for me, but if it's region free i'd love to buy this for a few folks on my Christmas list.

I'm looking forward to find out how the UK transfer compares to the JP release. I like combining the UK cleaner transfers along with the more "truer" JP Ghibli releases. If the UK transfer is the same as the JP I won't bother purchasing the UK release, although I might just for the subtitled extras.

Be nice

sigh, ah well, thanks for the heads up. I may still pick it up for myself though. Is the English dub on these discs the same as the Disney versions?
i prefer watching in the original language, but when i show the film to my 3 year old nephew it'd be nice to have a dubbed option.

In this case you need not wait if you can play the Region B blu-ray.

StudioCanal decided to use no DNR or Edge Enhancement this time and the picture quality is extremely close if not identical to the Japanese release. I have the Blu-ray myself and watched it on a Panasonic 65VT50E and was very impressed.

This is probably the best StudioGhibli StudioCanal has done so it seems they learned from their mistakes :-).

Personally I preferred their cleaned up versions, liked having the different choices.

Removing grain isn't cleaning up.

Agree'd. That's the apologist way of putting "removing part of a great movie" and that is essentially what DNR is. I don't know what others classify "cleaning up" but to me cleaning up means removing dirt, flecks, specks, burn marks and general damage for a more clear and stable image.

Yeah, because when they paint cel animaton, the paint is all grainy... Seeing introduced film grain from (possibly) a print or (maybe) a negative isn't really natural for animation. I think the UK Nausicaa is better than the US and Ja ones personally.

I finally rewatched this yesterday on BD. It looked great for the most part, but I did miss some grain in the images. It looked a little DNRed especially compared to the clips in the extras.

It is one of the better U.K. Studio Ghibli releases.
