Talking RESOGUN by Housemarque - Resogun Heroes DLC & Free Patch

Sony Computer Entertainment XDEV Studio Europe presents a Housemarque shoot-'em-up, only on PlayStation 4 via PSN

Single Player and Two-Player Online Co-op, released on PS4 launch day (free with PS+ sub)

OVERVIEW

From Housemarque OY and XDEV Studio Europe, the creators of Super Stardust HD and Dead Nation comes RESOGUN, the next generation of shoot ‘em up, developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

RESOGUN will be available as a digital download from the PlayStation Network.

KEY FEATURES

• Unleash a diverse array of devastating weapons including lasers, missiles, overdrive and nova-bombs, to blast hordes of enemies and rescue the last survivors from distant galactic colonies that are under ruthless attack from an evil alien invasion force
• Experience the most intense destruction ever, as the power of PlayStation 4 renders the entire world and every enemy, using millions of individual building blocks (voxels) that break up in real time as you battle to survive and the world is destroyed around you
• Push yourself to the limits in Arcade and Endless play modes and prove your skills in global leaderboards for each game mode and difficulty setting
• Join forces with your friends online and show off your skills in action packed co-op multiplayer

Welcome to RESOGUN. . . the most insanely intensive, ultra-responsive, fully 1080p HD, 60FPS shoot 'em up, only on PlayStation 4!

Hiya PlayStation.Blog. We are a team of game developers from a company called Housemarque, based in Helsinki, Finland. You might have heard of us before, especially if you’re a PlayStation enthusiast: do Dead Nation, Super Stardust HD or Super Stardust Delta ring any bells?

Our first PlayStation 4 title has been in development for a while now, and getting ready for the next gen debut has been an exciting ride.

Working on the Stardust franchise over the years has been both a challenge and a privilege, but if anything it deepened our love for shoot ‘em ups. Gameplay-centric games have a really special place in our hearts, and we try to keep our core audience in mind with each and every new title.

RESOGUN, our new exclusive PS4 game, adds a twist to the shooter genre, and while being very much a “spiritual successor” to the Stardust series, it doesn’t shy away from remixing ideas and influences of classic arcade titles such as Defender, Data Storm, or Japanese shmups like DoDonPachi and Death Smiles.

RESOGUN is an intense, fast-pace shooter that expands our love for the genre and represents a sort of culmination of all our expertise, both technical and gameplay-related. The cylindrical gameplay is closer to old school 2D shooters, and one interesting side effect of that is that the world has gravity now. You actually expect things to fall down, there are ground enemies… these elements completely change the playfield compared to the Stardust series.

That was the original idea, we stuck to that, and it proved to be the right thing to do.

If you were wondering if this is a traditional twin stick shooter… the answer is “no”. We did experiment with this but soon found that adding the horizontal-only constraint for the ship arsenal created a better gameplay experience.

It’s not all destroying everything that moves though. On top of shooting down the enemy forces players get to rescue small dudes trapped by the invading alien swarm: freeing them will release power ups and shields, and that adds a lot of strategy to the game. There will also be a bunch of different ships, co-op multiplayer, plus a ton of things that we can’t really talk about just yet.

Still, all details shall be revealed in good time. For the time being, we are very glad to be able to show off what’s been under wraps for the past few months.

Despite its core focus, RESOGUN is a fun, vivid and an accessible game all around – the perfect example of “easy to pick up but hard to master”. We are deeply convinced it will bring back memories of the good old arcade-destroying days, and it will do it in Full HD and at 60 frames per second, all while you shatter the game world cube by cube.

Still no 60fps trailer that isn't compressed to puke. Going into next-gen you have to develop the mental ability to combine sharp screenshots with the motion of smeary trailers.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought the same thing. Hell, now we have an excuse why the environments keep repeating in this instance.

I'm glad to see a game like this. We really need more next-gen shmups that aren't just rehashes.

I suck so badly at these games. I wish I didn't as they're visual eye candies to play.

1080p 60fps trailer in the house!

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-Tg.../preview?pli=1

It's still a bit soft when the action gets crazy but way, way, sharper and of course fluid than the 30fps YouTube video.

There's a few more screenshots in that SCEE media pack too.

This is the only video I've found where you can hear the game audio.

More off-screen gameplay, more not using BOOST to get out of trouble! Probably an older build than the dev interview above because it has a much more basic looking HUD.

I'm glad right stick is still shoot so you can reverse from danger while shooting. They also made boost like Super Stardust's IMPACT mode where as long as you keep hitting targets after boosting, you'll keep boosting.

Resogun is a blast, lets you throw humans
Quote:
Resogun looks great with its sharp edges and its eye popping lighting effects. One of the coolest visual aspects is that the game's world is made up of little cubes. Its fully destructible environment has stray fire busting up walls and flooring. They all do this neat thing where they kind of disintegrate and fall downward. And as you progress through each level, you're actually slowly destroying this world, bit by bit. If you manage to beat the boss the entire world blows up into little cubes. Housemarque says that the game's engine is capable of displaying 500,000 on screen at any time, in full HD at 60 frames per second. They're already working the PS4 hard.

There's this nice feeling of accessibility even with all of the bullets flying anywhere. If you're well-versed in shmups, you'll do fine. But if not, there's still hope for you. Some guidance I received after dying a few times had me relying on a refillable forward boost. This move adds temporary invincibility, letting you get out of messes a bit easier. This combined with spread bombs worked as training wheels until I got a good feeling of the game's movement.

Once I got that down, I fell into this pleasant, focused trance. After a clean series of dodges, close calls, well-timed boosts, and clean back shots, I was grinning ear to ear. My score multiplier was climbing and I felt powerful. But just as I got cocky, the game ramped up with several different kinds of attackers, coming from all directions. The trance faded a bit, though I still was having a blast.

Resogun throws a small twist in to keep things interesting. One of the control labels has a funny name: "Throw Human." It turns out that you'll look for "the last humans" alive and pick them up. They flail and dangle behind your ship until you can manage to safely take them to transport points. If you happen to be boosting by a transport point, you can actually throw the human in the proper direction. Properly transporting humans away from alien invaders will give you power-ups and other benefits.
Housemarque forum mod/dev
Quote:
Humans can be collected and transported to the pods at the top of the level. Each human gives you a power up: it could be a better main weapon, a bomb, a shield or more points.

The throw human button allows you to, ehr, throw a human at the end of a boost towards the collection pod. It saves time and it allows you to focus on other things. Kind of an advanced technique, we'll speak more about it later.

Overdrive builds up when you destroy normal enemies. When the overdrive bar is full (in some videos you can't see the HUD because it's not final yet) you can unleash a powerful attack with R1. It slows down time and blows things up very nicely.

Coop: I believe we will speak about details on this later on.
Lots of footage here.

New Details and Art Emerge For PS4-Exclusive Resogun

Quote:
Today, developer Housemarque has given IGN five pieces of exclusive art from the game, showing off each of Resogun’s five worlds. You can see some of that art embedded in this very article, and you can go here to see all five pieces of art in higher resolution.

Housemarque has also provided new information beyond (!) the game’s beautiful art. For starters, each of the game’s five worlds will come in three phases, as anyone who has played the game can attest. The last phase always includes a boss, which gives Resogun an almost Super Stardust-meets-Shatter kind of feel.

Additionally, Resogun comes packing four difficulty levels: Rookie, Experienced, Veteran, and Master. “Veteran and Master add on top of faster and more deadly waves [of enemies] a feature called ‘Revenge Bullet,’” according to the developer. We’ll see more of Revenge Bullet soon; it supposedly looks gorgeous when it’s unleashed.
