I noticed in the Nvidia control panel that 1920x1080 is marked as the native resolution -
![]() That doesn't seem right, shouldn't it be 3840/4096 x 2160 marked as native? I have a gtx 980 ti connected to a sony x810c via hdmi 2.0. I have the latest driver/firmware installed for both GPU and TV. Am able to choose any of the 4k settings in the nvidia control panel, even able to add the dsr multipliers for downsampling. For TV settings, I have it set to game mode plus the external input set to HDMI Enhance. Everything seems fine on my end (2160p/60hz/444), just wondering why 1920x1080 is labeled as the native resolution in the nvidia control panel? Edit: Forgot to mention, cable am using is the amazon basics hdmi 2.0 cable. |

It's because you're using HDMI. I'm not sure if the HDMI port(s) on your 980ti are hard 2.0s or if they are flashed 2.0s. Meaning they were 1.4a when they left the factory and then a driver update got them to 2.0. But no worries since you're getting 4k res @ 60 Hz

Yeah, no worries, I just tend to nitpick small details like that. Another thing I noticed is that when I switch the hdmi external input setting on the sony from enhanced to standard, the gpu will default to 1080p and vice versa, it will default to 2160p on enhanced.

Seems odd to me that it would be the graphics card, as I have a GTX970 (much older than the 980 Ti obviously) and it shows 3840x2160 as native on my Samsung.
I would have guessed it was due to the EDID on the Sony. |

^Yeah, I think you're right.
Checked Windows and it is also recommending 1080p - [Show spoiler] With both the nv control panel and windows settings recommending 1080p, the sony edid is indeed probably the culprit here. But again, not a big deal, all's working as it should, just a minor nitpick that was bugging me. |

Chances are slim to none than an existing PC BDROM would be upgradable to read UHD discs, much less actually play commercially released UHD movies. I'm not sure about the laser wavelength, but there's a whole lot more to it than that. Even if you assume upgradable firmware in drives, there's licencing issues , online activation requirements and probably a host of additional tech problems. The other drive circuits may not handle the data rate.

From what I remember I think there's some potential for PC drives to handle larger capacity discs, but the drives would probably need a firmware upgrade. But actual playback of the discs themselves would be an issue because of the lack of software.

it's remotely possible that BD-XL drives might be able to play UHD blu-rays with a firmware upgrade and the correct software, but so far nothing has actually been announced that would do that.
