Ok I know this is a silly question, but I am wondering what other people are doing about this.

Problem: Where in your movie collection do you store movies that are in the same series/collection, but the names are not the same.

For instance: The Christopher Nolan Batman Movies: Batman Begins, Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises. Do you file them under batman, so they are next to the other batman movies? Do you purely do them on their own title? SO one shows up with Batman, the other two Dark Knight.

Example 2: Clash of the Titans & Wrath of the Titans

Example 3: Romancing the Stone & Jewel of the Nile

Example 4: the Bond Films

I'm curious what everyone else is doing in these situations. Purely Alphabetical or keeping movie series together or maybe some other option.

I have my whole collection alphabetical, with the exception of boxed sets in unique cases(like the tin for band of brothers), or Large series of movies (bond, harry potter, star wars, star trek). I have used custom case labels to either save space or align some movies, or just because I liked it better. (I used a set of 4 6disc cases with custom labels for all of the bond films)

For the examples above: Batman I currently have the fancy boxed original films, plus the 3 separate dark knight films, I am debating a custom case solution, to either include all 7 films or split into first 4 plus last 3... Titans films not sure what I am doing with them yet (currently residing in my Not Yet Filed section). RtS and JoN are in a combined custom case and are filed under Romancing the Stone since its the first movie. Bond as mentioned resides in custom cases in separate area.

I keep them alphabetical with the exception of groups. Batman Begins is immediately followed by The Dark Knight and TDKR. I have the hobbit and lord of the rings films together (under L for LoTR). The bond movies would go together too. I only have the Daniel Craig films. With sets like that, I put them with the letter of the first film in the series. Like I have Kevin Smith's films with Jay and Silent Bob in order of release all grouped together.

For the bond films it was easy for me:
I have the bond 50 set lol

For movies that have sequels and such, I put them under the original first movie title and sequential order. Example the Fast and furious movies I have them under F and are placed 1,2,3,4,5,6 in order of release and not name.
Man of steel as the last superman movie, all batman movies by date of release. same with transformers.
If only we could do groups on the BD collection here it would be perfect.

Alphabetical, with some exceptions. Nightmare on Elm Street 1-5 and then Freddy's Dead and New Nightmare? Screw that, I just put them in order. I also tend to put remakes after earlier sequels (like Evil Dead 2 is shelved before the remake).

You can create your own groups/categories in your collection. I've made several in mine.

The only "catch" is that you are kind of stuck with however the system alphabetizes them. For instance, if you made a Superman category, Man of Steel would appear before the other Superman films. And depending on varying titles and other little oddities of how the collection system works, sometimes series/sequels won't always be in order (even if they start with the same main title).

But you can get closer to what you are trying to do.

thanks, interesting, still doing it half way would make it look more messy. I prefer to either leave it like it is now, or have the categories work as they should.

I have a few categories organized on the shelf for various reasons.

One section is animated, this includes films that aren't child friendly like the Resident Evil films.

One section is Scream Factory.

One section is comic book and/or superhero films. Films within this group are organized alphabetically first and then organized chronologically within their own timeline (such as, XMen First Class, followed by Origins, XMen 1, 2, 3, Wolverine, DofP).

All the James Bond films are separated and organized chronologically by release date, even non-canon films are included in here.

Godzilla films are separated and organized chronologically by release date as well, this includes King Kong vs. Godzilla even though it starts with K.

TV shows are separated and organized alphabetically.

All other films left over are organized alphabetically starting with the first film in a series and followed by any sequels (prequels starting with a different name would also go directly before the 1st film). So pretty much I follow the examples you've also presented, I just have additional groupings.

I too, do the same as a few others have posted. Casino Royale is followed by Quantum of Solace, folled by Skyfall. Batman Begins follows Batman Returns and Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises follow Batman Begins. All the Fast and Furious films are together. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is after Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Basically, movies in the same series go together after where the first title is placed.

Unless I get a special box set, etc. that has enough space to keep all the discs (either in the provided slots like Die Hard, Bond 50, Indiana Jones or in a multi-disc Viva Elite case(s) in, any movies in a series go in a multi-disc Viva Elite case as long as they aren't a remake/reboot. If they remake/reboot a series, I start a new case. Like the original Halloween series, I have the originals in a 6-disc case and then the Rob Zombie Halloween films are in a 2-disc case. All the Fast & Furious movies are in the tire set, the Texas Chainsaw movies are split into 3 separate cases. All the Batman movies I keep together with the original in its own case followed by the Anthology 4-pack box set and then each Nolan film in their own Steelbook.

Straight chronological, in order of release year. Box sets go by the year of the first movie in the box set.

DVDs and blu-rays are kept separate to maximize storage space.

Everything is alphabetical with the following exceptions:

1. All series go together, and in chronological order. So James Bond movies are all under "B" starting with Dr. No. Hobbit and LOTR go under "L" starting with The Hobbit films. Star Wars is under "S" starting with TPM. Star Trek all goes under "S" starting with TOS, then the TOS films, TNG, and finally the TNG films; haven't gotten Enterprise yet, but if I do I'll put it before TOS.

2. "Auteur" directors all go together, sorted by release date. For example, Kubrick movies go under "K," Tarantino under "T," David Lynch under "L," and Kevin Smith under "S."

I considered sorting by genre, but that see s like a pain to do. I might consider doing this with horror and science fiction films one day.

I also might separate my Criterions into their own section, but I don't really have enough to do this yet.

Alphabetical is the general rule ignoring The but some live outside that rule.
Batman Begins used to be under B followed by The Dark Knight but when The Dark Knight Rises came out it was filled under D for Dark Knight Trilogy but I go back and forth about this.
All the James Bond films start with B for the Bond 50 set I got.
I also have under S the Studio Ghibli films.
As for sequels they go after the original film in chronological order and spin offs stand alone.
Then box sets are together under their box name, future titles in the series will go after.

I have 6 distinct areas I organize my collection:
(1) Standard individual titles in Alphabetical Order
(2) Criterion Collection by Spine #
(3) Kid/Family films in Alphabetical Order
(4) Director box sets (i.e. Hitch, Kubrick, etc.) in Alphabetical Order
(5) Movie sets (i.e. Star Wars, Back to Future, Matrix, etc.) in Alphabetical Order
(6) TV sets in Alphabetical Order
