Pack Your Bags for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

In the fine tradition of The Squeakquel and Chipwrecked, Fox 2000 has revealed a puntastic subtitle for the fourth big screen Alvin and the Chipmunks adventure. Get ready for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip to drive into theaters late next year. Variety confirms the long-rumored title in a story today that also reports that “Veep” star Tony Hale will play the film’s villain. The casting makes a nice fit for the franchise as the villain in the previous film, Chipwrecked, was played by Hale’s “Arrested Development” co-star David Cross.

Scripted by Mrs. Doubtfire screenwriter Randi Mayem Singer and set to be directed by Walt Becker, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip will also star Jason Lee (Mallrats, “My Name is Earl”) as Dave Seville and will again feature the voices of Justin Long (Tusk, Drag Me To Hell), Matthew Gray Gubler (“Criminal Minds,” (500) Days of Summer) and Jesse McCartney (“Army Wives,” “Young Justice”) as the headlining chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore.

Combined, the three previous movies, which started with 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, have grossed over $560 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide, although the last movie grossed $100 million less in North America than the previous two movies. All the previous movies have received a similar pre-Christmas release.

Nothing is known about the plot for the new movie although it will once again feature the three singing chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. back in 1958.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip hits theaters on December 16, 2016
