I've always been hesitant to watch this one because of its subject material... is it hard to watch or no?

If you're an animal lover, it is a tough watch. I thought it was a great movie, but I'm hesitant to buy it 'cause I don't know if I'd ever watch it again. A particular scene was just too heart-wrenching for me.

I am. I know it deals with dog fighting, and I love dogs, so I've always been hesitant to watch it, despite being a fan of the directors work. I might pass.

I was getting deja-vu because this was already talked about in the criterion thread. Having its own thread threw me off.

I'll buy it. I had the UK version of this one BD and then the U.S. version and now will have the Criterion version. It's a great film. The UK version came out like 10 years ago, too, but it was region B, so unless you had a region free player then you were screwed.

Cool I guess. Dunno what the point of the 2017 Lionsgate release was though. I guess they just wanted to cash in on The Revenant?

I was hesitant as well until I did some research. They aren't actually fighting. Their muzzles were tied shut so they wouldn't bite. They jump on each other for a second like they're playing and the camera cuts away. The fast cuts and the sounds effects make it all seem real.

Quote:
IÑÁRRITU: First of all, I have a dog and I love dogs. It was very complex and difficult to reproduce a real dogfight, to achieve a level of realism without hurting the dogs. I hired an American guy who supplies animals for all the feature films in Mexico, and all of the actors were trained to handle the dogs; it was a lot of work. During shooting I tried to construct emotional stress within the dogfight scenes but put very little explicit footage of the actual dogfights.

FILMMAKER: That’s true – we only see the dogs connect very briefly, and then you cut to the faces of the actors.

IÑÁRRITU: Exactly, because it’s not about that; it’s only one element of the first story. I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I felt I had to show the blood because I wanted to unnerve people, since that’s how I felt when I went there to actual dogfights, in order to reproduce them. I thought, "They’re going to kill me." But the way I did it was, we took invisible fishing line, painted it the color of the dog’s hair and attached it to them. These dogs are also trained for personal security, so they’re trained like this, and to them, they’re playing. Sometimes they would start making love in the middle of the scene; it was very funny. With the handheld camera and the sound design, it seems real, but if you pause the DVD, you can see the technique. When they were supposed to be dead, we would inject them with a veterinary anesthesia for 20 minutes — their owner was always there, shouting, "No more than 20 minutes!" I treated the actors worse than the animals!

It's announced the new restoration will be screening at Morelia Film Festival in October and Mexico City’s Zocalo square in December. It's going to be a fun 2021 when Criterion releases Amores Perros and the Wong Kar-wai box set.

This is great news! I own so many editions of the movie in various formats but have always been hesitant to give it a respin. As much as I love the movie, I also find it too grim and disturbing. Will definitely be picking the Criterion release. Hopefully they'll add some interesting extras - something all previous releases sorely lacked.

I have not been keeping up with the WKW thread for the last month but was it stated by Criterion that the set was delayed now into 2021?

Nothings been confirmed. The assumption is they wanted a theatrical run of the movies before the hole video release. That’s how it’s happened before with new restorations.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I can see how COVID would have put that on hold. Forgot about a potential theatre run before the release of the set. Well fingers crossed it is still out before the end of the year. I am surprised that they are releasing the Bruce Lee and the Agnes sets only a month apart.

That's dangerous though, and they could die. The vet makes you sign a release form for any procedures requiring anaesthesia.

Yeah, In The Mood for Love restoration was supposed to screen at Cannes this year, but Cannes has been cancelled.
