Default Death Proof / Planet Terror

I have seen at a couple of stores were these are $10 a piece. I have not seen them but I am a big fan of RR and QT. Are they worth the purchase? quality wise? Or should i just buy the new release that has them both? TIA

Get both if you can find the individuals cheaper. BUT BUY GRINDHOUSE FIRST!!!

The individual releases are the extended cuts which were shown in Europe, Asia, and South America since they weren't released as Grindhouse in those places.

The new release you speak of isn't simply two movies on a disc (like Superman and Superman II). Planet Terror was not actually a movie released in theatres. Nor was Grindhouse (not in North America anyway). Grindhouse was the film that contained several segments including P.T. and D.P.

Grindhouse was the original movie which contained both stories (Planet Terror and Death Proof) along with several other short bits. The experience was designed to see as a whole.

On video, Planet Terror and Death Proof were re-edited and released individually. Although they are certainly entertaining individually, there are many subtleties that are lost in the process.

So if you watch them individually - and without the smaller segments of Grindhouse - you will lose some of the context.

Grindhouse, as seen in theatres, is now finally available on Blu-ray.

This has the shortened versions of Death Proof and Planet Terror, and all those awesome fake trailers, consession stand promos, etc.

The $10 version of Death Proof is a longer version of the film, but has none of the trailers, promos, etc.

The $10 version of Planet Terror is a longer version of the film, but only has the Machete trailer (the fake one from Grindhouse), and also has a "scatch-free" version, without the digitally added grain, and simulated film damage.

I absolutely LOVE Planet Terror, so I went for the stand-alone version.
I also really enjoyed Grindhouse, so when that comes down a bit in price, I will go for that as well, so that I have the entire Grindhouse experience.

I hope this helps

hehe...i bought Grindhouse just for the fake trailers. still prefer the individual efforts. The only way to watch Death Proof is to view the extended full version. Grindhouse edit is a bit too short for me.

I saw Grindhouse in the theaters and really enjoyed it.

That said the stand alone Planet Terror is one of my favorite 'Zombie'/ Virus flicks ever.

It is truly a masterpiece.

Deathproof to me was weak, and lackluster.
I own the copy now finally just because they were giving it away for 9 bux.

Machete was the best thing to come out of Grindhouse.

Torn with indecisiveness here. I want Death Proof (I shudder typing that) just to complete my Tarantino blu collection. I want to own it "properly" which means getting Grindhouse but the theatrical version jettisons the movie's only worthwhile scene (you know what I'm referring to.)

Yeah, I can capitulate and buy it individually + Grindhouse but I could never live with myself if my collection contained two copies of Death Proof.

I empathize, maybe he can work in the best bits of DP into KB:TWBA, and dump the rest. Uma and the girls road trip with russel's corpse bouncing down the road tied to the poosie wagon's bumper.

Technically, you don't own two copies of Death Proof that way. Rather you own two versions of Death Proof. The shorter theatrical version and the extended home video version. No different than Blade Runner giving you five versions of the film and most Judd Apatow directed films offering theatrical & extended versions.

Warner UK was kind enough to even include the 1999 version of Payback and the 2007 Straight Up Director's Cut in one package. The two versions of the film share different final act along with various other alterations.

I have the individual steelbooks for Planet Terror and Death Proof on DVD, the Tarantino Blu-ray box set that contains Reservoir Dogs through Inglourious Basterds (including the extended individual Death Proof), and the Grindhouse Blu-ray.

I should eventually pick up Planet Terror on Blu-ray. Maybe there should be a Robert Rodriguez box set like the one Tarantino got? That would be cool. I've never seen the Spy Kids movies, or any of his kids movies for that matter. He has a scattered filmography. Heh

It would be cool to have a Grindhouse extended edition, with both films attached as a double feature like in theaters, but they're also their extended cuts. I'd be into that.

Is it true that the Grindhouse blu doesn't feature lossless audio whereas it was available on the individual releases?

Seems like a pretty persuasive argument for not buying it.
