Universal Studios Crimson Peak (2015)

Amazon pre-order

Quote:
Released: 9th February 2016
Further Details:
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment have announced the Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD) and DVD releases of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak.

The Blu-ray Combo Pack will include:

Feature Commentary with co-writer and Director Guillermo Del Toro
Deleted Scenes
The Light and Dark of Crimson Peak – Crimson Peak offers a stylized turn of the century with carefully crafted visuals that provide the perfect backdrop for Del Toro’s brand of psychological horror. Follow the phases of production to discover a booming America and a dark and removed England portrayed with a multi-layered sophistication unlike any seen in recent cinema.
Beware Of Crimson Peak – Tom Hiddleston (Sir Thomas Sharpe) offers a walking tour of the many secret spaces in Allerdale Hall.
I Remember Crimson Peak – A series of interviews with director Guillermo del Toro and his standout cast, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain.
A Living Thing –An army of artisans was amassed to construct the Sharpe mansion on North America’s largest soundstage. Witness first-hand and in great detail the construction of Del Toro’s most elaborate set to date.
A Primer on Gothic Romance – Employing his encyclopedic knowledge and passion for the genre, Guillermo del Toro traces the lineage of Gothic Romance in cinema. Using Crimson Peak as the basis, Del Toro outlines the history of cinematic terror and illuminates the differences between traditional scares and elevated horror.
Crimson Phantoms – Del Toro’s approach to make-up effects is discussed by award-winning effects house DDT. In this piece, they offer an exclusive look inside their workshop, where they deconstruct the creation of the film’s most disturbing prosthetic effects. The discussion delves into the mythology of these elegant creatures and how Del Toro’s belief in the supernatural informed the design and narrative of the ghosts.
Hand Tailored Gothic – Costume designer Kate Hawley unravels her collaboration with Del Toro and reveals the symbolism constantly at play in the wardrobe’s design.
Quote:
When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro comes a supernatural mystery starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam.

Wasn't really feeling this one. The visuals were lovely, and the ending was rather
[Show spoiler]outrageous, with the incest twist plus Jessica Chastain chasing Mia Wasikowska around the estate with a knife. Mia's acting bothered me though (as it does in pretty much everything) and her character said & did things that didn't feel appropriate to the period.

Worth seeing once maybe, but I won't be picking this up.

I received an email from Zavvi today saying that they're going to have a steelbook release for this.

I'll Netflix it before I decide (like always).

This movie looked too good to not get on blu. The story was blah yes, but the acting was great by all three leads and the visuals were just amazing.

I'm seeing this tomorrow, but I've already done the pre-order for the Blu-ray. If it's in the same vein as Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, and Pan's Labyrinth, I'll probably really enjoy it.

I fairly enjoyed this movie but my girlfriend hated it - she was hoping it would be more scary. I'll probably pick it up at launch if it has a steelbook or an amazing slip, otherwise I'll wait for it to drop to about $10 or so.

I was looking immensely forward to seeing this. I never get out to the movies, but I was planning to go this week for this one if I can make it there. Haven't been to a movie in over a year, in fact. But I'm hearing a lot of negative word of mouth, and it did bad at the box office. What gives? It looks stunning and Del Toro is always worth at least one watch for every movie he's done. I like the cast a great deal, as well. It was marketed like crazy, I saw commercials for it all month long all over the place, and cast & director on talk shows, etc.

Can anyone give an entirely spoiler free explanation for why it is doing rather underwhelmingly at the box office and in people's opinions I'm reading everywhere?

Really enjoyed this. Set design and costumes were crazy good. For me, the movie had an old school Corman-Poe type feel (obviously much more polished) with some Bava overtones too. Not for anyone looking for a scary movie though. Did feel like the movie's weak link was Mia.

Variety indicated it's too bloody for the Harlequin crowd but not scary enough for horror fans...so it's kind of in a netherworld where it appeals to neither.

That would be the problem...especially as it's being marketed as a scary movie.

Yeah, Del Toro seems to be fighting the studio on this. Every interview I've seen with him he pushes hard that it's not a horror film, it's a gothic romance. Studio obviously doesn't know how to market that, or believe anyone wants to see one, so they've pushed it as a horror. Poor performance seems to be attributable to horror fans getting wind it isn't that scary and non-horror fans being scared that it is. Had to drag my other half to it because she's scared of everything but she absolutely loved it.

I really think it's the way its being marketed. If you expect a horror film going in you're going to be disappointed. Guillermo has said all along that is not a horror film, but the marketing has made it look like it is. From what I can see it's more like Devil's Backbone. But the one thing everyone is saying is how visually stunning it is.

It is very much like The Devil's Backbone, crossed with something like Jane Eyre. And to say that it's pretty is an understatement.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think the distributor knew what to do with this as far as marketing. There are a couple of jump scares, but it's really not that type of movie. The protagonist is a writer, and she describes her story as "a romance novel that has a ghost in it. Not a ghost story." That pretty much describes the movie itself. The art direction and costumes are spectacular though.

I saw Crimson Peak this afternoon and really quite enjoyed it. The beginning was a bit slow and I wasn't really feeling it, then in the middle it got interesting, and the ending was pretty good. Hiddleston was great from the get-go, and Chastain really brought it for the film's end. Wasikowska was serviceable, but overall just sort of okay.

I quite liked the little nods to The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth. Hiddleston's English countryside was certainly a highlight, as well.
