Default Old Movie Theaters long gone.

At the Cinema Treasures website. I found an old newspaper clipping of The Mall Theater in Johnson City Tennessee. It opened in 1971 and was demolished in 1992. It was an Ultra:Vision screen when it first opened. Then it went to two screens in 1979. The first movie shown there was Love Story.

This place was awesome. Saw Return of the Jedi, Gremlins, the Star Wars Special Edition releases, Aliens at this theater. There were many more that I can't remember.

We actually have two older theaters here still kicking.

One traditional

This is where I saw Ghostbusters, Indy, Burton's Batman and other assorted classics.

We also have a drive-in. I've never been.

Lastly we have an early 70s era "plaza twin" theater. This was built when having TWO smaller screens was seen as better than one big screen.

I'd say movie theaters in general are a dying breed these days but our last trip for the latest Spiderman movie the place was pretty busy. It just seems studios are resorting to their own streaming services and skipping the theater "middle-man" altogether.

having lived in Washington DC since age 3, the coming and going of movie theaters is just sad and so unfortunate - in upper NW DC, alone, there were ten movies theatres (30 screens) at one point, it's down to one theatre, two screens ~ the wait for if Landmark is reopening the Uptown is still in question.

New Line Cinema

There is a book released on the topic about old cinemas that were opened in Ireland from days gone by. I saw this book in a bookshop in Dublin at that point. It had some interesting history about some of my cinemas in my local part of south Dublin

The book is called Irish Cinemas: A History in Photographs by Jim Keenan

I had found in it that there used to be an old cinema in Blackrock in Dublin in the early 1900's. The cinema is now turned into a coffee shop/apartment building/betting shop.

I used to go into an old cinema with my mother in Sandycove & Glasthule in Dublin when I was a kid in the 90's. It's not there anymore either. It turned into a car mechanics garage business.

But there are now 2 cinemas in nearby Dún Laoghaire. One is an arthouse cinema located near The Royale Marine Hotel which is near the centre of the town. The other one is is the IMC near a shopping centre called Bloomfields.

I used to go to a gorgeous old palace of a theater back in the late 1980s-early 1990s.

It looked like a mansion or a museum from outside, with steps and big white pillars and such. It had been there since at least the 30s. It was taken over in the 80s by Cineplex Odeon chain. It showed first run, prestige films, in exclusive, reserve engagements. It had a coffee house, and a lounge in it. They were affiliated with some film society group and put out their own monthly magazine about current/upcoming films. The magazines were distributed in the lobby. Some films you got a little program brochure with. There was a very nice restaurant next door, as well. It was great for a classy evening out.

I remember seeing "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Pelle the Conqueror", "Dead Ringers", several Almodovar films, "Wings of Desire", several Woody Allen films, "Cinema Paradiso", "My Left Foot", "Drugstore Cowboy", "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover", "Henry and June", "GoodFellas", "Santa Sangre", "My Own Private Idaho", "JFK", ""Sex, Lies and Videotape", "Raise the Red Lantern", "The Crying Game" and many , many others there over several years.
