Default Jem and the Holograms - Live Action Movie

Jon M. Chu Is Making A 'Jem And The Holograms' Movie

Quote:
If you combined the talents of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" director Jon M. Chu, Justin Bieber manager Scooter Braun, and "Paranormal Activity" Producer Jason Blum, what movie would most likely be the result?

If you said a live action version of classic 1980's cartoon "Jem and The Holograms," well, you're the only one.

As just announced on YouTube, and emphasized on the accompanying video over and over that it isn't a joke, the trio is looking to do an updated version of the 'toon, and if that wasn't enough they want to cast it through Tumblr.

Seriously.

If you head to JemTheMovie.com, they've already set up a website announcing the "truly outrageous" project, and want fans to suggest casting using the hashtag #JemTheMovie. They can submit themselves for the project, or a star like, say, Miley Cyrus. Because this project needs to get more ridiculous.

The animated show, which was created by writer Christy Marx in 1985 in conjunction with a line of toys being launched by Hasbro (which may explain the Chu connection, given his work on "G.I. Joe"), revolved around a regular girl named Jerica who used hologram technology to become music superstar Jem. Along with her band, they fought the forces of evil girl band The Misfits in order to protect a super-computer named Synergy.

Yup, Tumblr seems about the right place to cast this movie, after all.

We'll keep you appraised of further details as the project develops.

Not sure about the creative team behind this. I would also prefer an animated film with an '80s setting instead of a contemporary live action adaptation.

I've been watching the complete series DVD lately and this show is just completely over the top and wild so the movie better keep that tone.

Awesome...had the theme song on my phone when the wife would call me.

Well, Chu messed up GI Joe so it's likely he'll mess this up too. If he makes everything contemporary and uses contemporary costumes, it will be nothing but a generic movie.

I enjoyed the cartoon, but the creative team behind this does lil to inspire me. Who decided that iit was OK for these guys to make a movie.....Its not OK...first Chu bastardizes GiJoe and now this. If Hollywood insist on resurrecting the 80's can they at least get it right!

Don't know how I feel about three dudes helming a project like this, let alone who those three dudes are.

Definitely don't like how Christy Marx, series creator and writer, has been completely locked out of the project in every way by Hasbro.

thats sad but expected i guess, studios likely think creators will be too clingy and stuck in the era of when they created their characters

They're just so completely going to ignore/ruin The Misfits.

(Although, Chu was the one who actually put Cobra Commander back INTO the GI Joe franchise, so there's some hope for 80's iconography.)

When I read the first post I assumed those guys were taking this project so they can have a casting couch of revolving young and gorgeous women. They are actually making the movie though! Interesting. I think I used to watch that when I was a kid, or at least I remember the show.

WOH!

Oh, and this line from the article made me laugh, "Pretty Little Liars' Aurora Perrineau will play the Holograms' Shana" -- I was like, who the hell is that?! Looked her up, and she was in exactly ONE episode three seasons ago. Heh.

I don't know what's worse: the fact they are making this movie or the fact that there are 34 posts supporting this decision.

Just because one posts in a thread doesn't mean they support the subject.

I sure as hell don't, especially since this looks like it might be a cheap production, made by a trio of dude-bros, with no creative input from the show's creator and chief writer.

Anyone here that can confidently say that they are a fan of this movie like me? Not only do I prefer it to other Hasbro films like Transformers, Battleship, or G.I. Joe but it turned out to be one of my favorites of 2015.

In no particular order:
1. The Revenant
2. Room
3. Carol
4. The Danish Girl
5. Brooklyn
6. Ex Machina
7. The Hateful Eight
8. It Follows
9. Mad Max: Fury Road
10. Cinderella
11. Jem and the Holograms
12. Crimson Peak
13. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
