Default Anyone ever seen any good Nollywood films?

I'm kind of curious. There were a few on Netflix I saw out of curiosity. Boring cliche crappy writing and microbudget production values, but hey, I know what kind of industry it is (after looking it up) so I won't look down on it. That being said, I have heard of a few filmmakers there really trying to make something great and interesting, and I was just wondering if anybody had seen anything that was.

If not, oh well, now you're aware of the existence of one of the largest film industries in the world that nobody in the Western world has heard of!

Thought it would be more fun if people looked it up and found out what it's about.

"Boring cliche crappy writing and microbudget production values?" Can't imagine why no one's talking about these movies...

I didn't know the Nigerians had a film industry, much less one big enough to have their own Hollywood counterpart...

Haha, it's actually very interesting for the story of it's existence. Not because the movies are great. In terms of volume output, it's the second largest film industry in the world after Bollywood.

Why would you ever think anyone on this website would want to look anything up?

Might be 2nd largest based on amount of movies made, but definitely not even close to amount of money made.

According to Wikipedia, there are only 100 screens in Nigera. And the total box office for the entire year of 2013 was $800 Million USD, which is less than what the top 2 US films alone made that year.

But how much of that is profit? Hollywood spends an insane amount of money to make one movie, so even if they make more money yearly but the profit margins are less, that doesn't make them more successful.

The biggest market for Nollywood films is VCDs. They get distributed all over Africa. I don't think they would pump them out like they do if it wasn't somewhat profitable, at least by the standards of their nation's economy. Not claiming it makes anything close to Hollywood of course.

Now all the Nigerian Prince email scams of the early 2000's makes sense. They just needed funding for all their films!

Don't forget adding the suffix "gate" to every kind of scandal.
