Imbd.com says the release date is January 22nd. Is that the theater release or blu ray?

Theater. Blu-ray is unkown for now. Could be another 3 or 4 months.

I wonder if this movie will be any good. Looks pretty generic to me. Like a mix between those horrible divergent films and Independence Day.

I figured this one would be day-and-date. I'll see it in theaters this weekend. If it's any good, I'll get the UHD version.

The book was highly acclaimed, but my understanding of the film is as follows:
  • Lowish budget was allocated to the film.
  • During casting, almost none of the "first picks" were cast, and even if they were, they often ended up in different roles than their originally intended role.
  • Chloe Moretz was the ONLY person who auditioned for the lead role as she was a fan of the book.
  • The film, based on reviews, has a decent early setup but the second half falls into YA trope-mania.
  • It doesn't help that so many YA films have come out with similar premises and montages lately. THG, Maze Runner, Divergent, Twilight, etc. etc.
  • Dark action scenes filmed with natural lighting hurt audience involvement in those scenes.

I say all this having not seen the film yet. I'll probably catch it on Netflix or somewhere else eventually, as it looks semi-intriguing, but not worth spending a ticket on (for myself, anyway) from what I can tell.

Saw this over the weekend. As mentioned above, first act shows promise but after that it just turns into a typical tween film and kind of just gets silly. Didnt realize how tweeny oriented it was. it certainly attempts to set itself up for a sequal/sequals. Not that i imagine it will do well enough to get one.

I'm still debating whether or not to see this in theaters. I really liked the book, but it sounds like they screwed up where other movies in the YA genre didn't. They all have cheesy dialogue and sappy romances, but usually that stuff is toned down considerably in the film adaptations. Divergent(the first one at least) and The Hunger Games series got it right. Whereas from what I've heard, they left it all in with The 5th Wave.

And no, it's not looking good box office wise(at least domestically) for The Infinite Sea getting made. But like I said in the other thread, that book was horrible. And The Last Star isn't even out yet. So maybe we're not missing out on much.

This brings up a good point, will there even be an option to rent UHD disc or will digital rental be the only option?

http://www.store-3d-blurayrental.com/ plans on renting them. I initially joined them in 2012 for 3D BD rentals. But now I also supplement my Netflix rentals with 2D rentals from 3d-blurayrental. I was glad to see that they will be renting the UHD BD titles too.

Plus I rent BD titles, like from Lionsgate, where Netflix/Redbox only have the legacy audio Codecs. 3d-blurayrental will have the full retail disc to rent with the Advanced audio codecs on it.

Sony has marked the Blu-ray: "4K Mastered".

Shot with the ARRI ALEXA XT Plus. Rebuild incoming I think.

The Amazon pre-order link for this release is active again (after being away for a couple of weeks).

http://www.amazon.com/The-5th-Wave-4...=B01AYDOI1O&m=

At the moment it says 'Currently unavailable', but at least the page is back up.

2 Swedish websites shows Scandinavian release date to be 2016-06-06. The US release will probably be earlier, but it seems like we for sure will have this by summer.

Assuming that Sony sticks with the day-and-date policy on UHD releases, we can expect 04/19/2016 as release date for The 5th Wave UHD blu-ray. Several webshops outside the US are also showing this date, but no date yet on Amazon.

It's a Tuesday and about 3 1/2 months after the theatrical release. I could see that.
