This is sad news to hear but what a wonderful legacy of film performance she leaves behind. She elevated everything I ever saw her in, including vital roles well into her later years. I think my personal favorite is Hot Millions. RIP dear lady.

I saw the headline and immediately had all the air sucked out of me in shock. Genuinely devastated. I know it’s silly to get all worked up over a celebrity dying but Maggie has had an everlasting impact on my life, from childhood until her last role.

She will forever be Mother Superior and Gunilla Garson Goldberg to me.

When she sees Robin Williams, I hope she gives him a good squelch. That was the first film I ever saw (for both of them) at such a young age. That's how I'll remember them both the most.

One of the greats! Looking at her filmography, it's remarkable how many great performances she gave us.

If I were to recommend only one (outside the obvious choices), I'd say A Private Function. During the UK post-war rationing years, she plays Lady Macbeth by way of Alan Bennett, and she makes the needs of the very real while still being hysterical.

Rest in Peace.

This is very sad indeed. She was especially wonderful as Professor McGonagall and a huge part of the heart and charm of the Harry Potter films.

This is fairly shocking for me, though I'm not sure why. I first saw Maggie in Hook, followed by the Sister Act films and the 1993 version of The Secret Garden. All were tremendous films, and then she did Harry Potter, which changed my perception of her in a new but excellent way. I still think Granny Wendy is her best role, though; even though she didn't have much screen time with Robin Williams, this scene still gives me chills. Rest in peace, Maggie - you will definitely be missed.

It is my opinion that Maggie Smith's performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is the greatest I have ever seen in a film.

<------

Also loved her in Downton Abbey.

One of the very greatest.

Very sad news. So many great roles but I'll always remember her fondly from Clash of the Titans and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel series. RIP.
