Certainly is! I sold off most of my Fox Film Noirs convinced they'd get upgrades. Very slowly but surely getting through them..

Maybe we'll also get Night and the City from the BFI DVD set?

NIGHT AND THE CITY (Limited Edition Blu-ray)
A Film by Jules Dassin

Adapted from the lowlife novel of the same name, Night and the City was directed by twice Academy Award-nominated Jules Dassin and stars Richard Widmark as Harry Fabian, an ambitious American hustler who dreams of getting into the wrestling business in post-war London.

The film was at the centre of a controversy when its director, Jules Dassin, was added to the Hollywood blacklist during the production of the film, and was unable to oversee either the editing or music score.

Upon initial release the film was overlooked by critics but was re-evaluated in the 1960s when it was celebrated for its ground-breaking lack of sympathetic characters and finally recognised as a baroque masterpiece of corruption, paranoia and doom. .

Special features

Includes both the US and the previously unseen British version of the film
Audio commentary on the US release by Paul Duncan
New audio commentary on the British version by film critic Adrian Martin
The Guardian Lecture: 1981 interview with Jules Dassin by film critic Alexander Walker
Actor Richard Widmark interviewed at the National Film Theatre in 2002 by Adrian Wootton

US | 1950 | black and white | English language | 95 minutes | Cert PG

Looks like it's coming.

I might keep the old dvds for the Eddie Muller commentaries.

And i searched, haha.. Didn't even think to actually click in the one that said 'currently unavailable'.

Looks comparable to the Criterion version extras-wise. With both cuts, I'm assuming they'll be using the same masters.

I liked Laura and loved Anatomy of a Murder. How do the films here stack up?

If my memory serves right, Where the Sidewalk Ends was a pretty solid noir (featuring Dana Andrews & Karl Malden),
Whirlpool had an interesting premise but it quickly spiralled into predictable territory.
I dont recall seeing Fallen Angel.

I would also highly recommend the incredibly atmospheric Bunny Lake Is Missing (starring Laurence Olivier) & the star-studded Advise & Consent (featuring Laughton's last role).

^Have seen Bunny Lake...it's interesting but gets a little too contrived. But like you say, atmospheric.

Fallen Angel is one my favorite Noirs.. really atmospheric and well done...it is more of a mystery in the second half. It has that dark, brooding atmosphere that I enjoy a lot
Where the Sidewalk Ends is also good solid entertainment

Whirlpool, a distant third was really flat IMO, Tierney had a bad haircut on top of the film just being kind of meh. Something wasnt gelling in that one.

I rank Where the Sidewalk Ends on the same level as Laura but I dont rate Laura as high as many (this is all relative obviously, Laura and Sidewalk are both excellent films to me). Fallen Angel has an excellent first half but I didnt really care for the second. Whirlpool is an interesting mess.

I will be getting this set for Sidewalk and the first half of Fallen Angel but I am strange like that in that I am happy to revisit films I dont full enjoy but like parts of.

Given that this is a region B and at an exorbitant price, one has to wonder just how good the BR transfers are compared to the dvd or even what is available streaming? If one doesn't have or hasn't seen the dvd's and wants them badly enough, then go for it.

The Amazon listing states that this is a 'Limied Edition' - is that because these are UK releases of American films?

Exorbitant? £55 is the list-price. It will doubtless drop to £40 or lower, which is still cheaper than it would cost US customers to buy the TT discs of Fallen Angel and Sidewalk, plus you get Whirlpool thrown in for free.
