Smile Playing With My 1.1

Like Josh, I received my copy of "Resident Evil: Extinction" last night and immediately updated one of my PS3's to FW version 2.10 to check it out. I got to play around with the PiP feature on REE and I have to say I was VERY impressed.

Essentially during the playing of the film, there is a small box in the lower right-hand side of the screen with various cast members commenting on the movie itself or the scene currently being shown. Both the video quality and audio quality are first rate for the feature.

I can see as studio's get more experience with this new Blu-ray technology, the options will be endless. It is nice to have this new feature available for Blu-ray

Is the sound slightly mixed or just the voice of the person speaking with no movie sound coming through?

It was just the voice of the person talking in the PiP.

PiP is a gimmick and the only reason I am "glad" to have it is the fact the Red Ants just lost a talking point.

With some creative minds though, this could really turn in to something very special.

I completely agree. I hardly ever look at features on a disc. Nice to be able to kick PiP back into red ants little face now though.

Hey, if someone likes the extras, all the power to them. Personally, I think the studios should wake up and understand if you want to sell HDM, provide top tier audio and video, a little extra special touch on the extras, and be done with it.

The damn BD-J video games and HDi online ads for a Touareg aren't going to get it done folks.

Nice to know it all works as it should without any glitches, not what some HD-DVD doom mongers were looking for.

If it's similar to the T3 release but streamlined better, then it's not all that impressive. Now, if they're able to do what Freedom from BV USA has been able to do with its picture in picture functions, then we'll have something impressive.

Totally agree. Stuff like PiP is just a worthless and potentially harmful gimmick.

Josh, can the PiP window be resized in any way, or is it fixed?

I played around with trying to do that, but I was not able to resize or move it. It did move on its own though. I believe titles in the future will allow you to both resize and move as you please though.

Obviously the Commentary is within the PiP screen but when you choose to watch a trailer via Pop Menu will it play within the PiP screen or open up a new screen like it currently does in previous discs?

I see,

You have to be a Josh to get stuff like this.

Maybe I ought to change my name.

p.s. I couldn't care any less about the PIP but I haven't seen that movie yet.

It would be better if it gave you the option of pausing the movie and then listen to the commentary but I'd rather have that option in the bonus section of the disc. Why block a part of the beautiful screen?

This would be a cool demo option if you were to show a non HD person what IME, Bonus View, Profile 1.1, Codename: useless, is.

If the Only PiP content that can be shown is the Director commentary this really is a feature I will never use but if all features were accessible via PiP this will be worth the hub bub and a cool and entertaining feature for those with a small attention span.

Cool.

Anybody try this on a 1.0 player to see how the disc behaves? Is the PiP option completely hidden or does it just play as a standalone video stream?
