Default No Picture from my QNAP TS-251 NAS on my new receiver?

Hey all.

Hoping someone here can help me. I recently got a Marantz NR 1504 receiver, and I hooked everything up to it that I have. Everything works, the cable box, XBoxOne, and the internet radio, but I can't get a picture from the NAS. It has an HDMI port on the back, and I use it to watch my blu-ray's. But, if I can't see anything, obviously that's not good. I leave the NAS on all the time, as I can download any movie to the NAS at any time, and even resetting or restarting the NAS has no effect. I have it connected to the Media Player HDMI of the receiver, so there should be no problems, but my TV is not getting a signal at all. The TV goes into auto shutdown mode if I leave the receiver on the Media Player setting too long. Has anyone come across something like this, and is there something I can do to kick it to make it work. I'm banging my head against a wall here.

Thanks.

have you tried connecting the QNAP directly to the tv to see if you can get a signal?

I have. And it works. On a whim, I connected the NAS to the "Aux" port on the front of the receiver, and BAM!, it works. So, why would it not work on the "Media Player" input on the back. I have an HDMI cable sticking out of the front of my receiver, and if I have to leave it that way, I will, but I'd really rather have it hidden with the rest of the cables in the back. Weird, right?

that is weird it doesnt work.. and im an anti clutter person too.. i hate cables showing.. have you tried connecting other sources to your media player input to see if the signal works? is there a setting in the menus receiver that needs tweaked to enable the media input. if you dont want visible clutter maybe an automatic HDMI switch could be used between the BD player and the Qnap?
i have a little zotac zbox with HDMI output and it has handshake issues when connected to my integra preamp.. it works fine till you switch sources then if you switch back you have to reboot it to get it to display correctly..
electronics are nifty but when they dont work as you want them to it sucks.

ive gotten to where i hate the HTPC.. always seems when you want to use it or show it off it either needs updated or some setting has to be tweaked. i cant stand Kodi either..

i just looked at your receiver on crutchfield and another thing to check is the assignable hdmi inputs and make sure its set correctly. make sure your number 4 input (media player) is actually set to (media player) since they are assignable it could be set to the wrong source.

I actually went to Marantz, they are really fast at responding to questions, and it doesn't work due to HDCP reasons. I either have to buy a box that fixes that, wait for QNAP to release a new firmware that might fix it, or live with it. At this point, live with it is my decision. Thanks for your many suggestions, they were all ones that Marantz and I went through on checking.

Have you tried turning on everything before turning on the NAS?

(not likely because a NAS is usually always on) ... But that can help solve a HDCP issue. If the full path to video is "seen" by the NAS then video is sent other wise it's not.

I may not be explaining myself well. so I will try a little diagram...

HTPC -> AVR -> Projector ... this is a part of my signal chain... The first time I boot the HTPC I have to have the projector on or only audio will go to the AVR. (Thankfully the JRiver on HTPC has a "keep hdmi alive" option so that as long as the PC stays on this doesn't happen again.)

I have tried that, and it does work, where I turn the NAS off. But it takes around 4 min. to boot to main screen, and I'd rather pop discs into a machine than wait that long. I'm giving this a try, as recommended by Marantz,
https://www.hdfury.com/shop/otherhdf...dware/dr-hdmi/
It's supposed to correct HDCP handshake issues, and correct problems. We'll see when I get it, I ordered it last night. Free shipping means slow shipping, and I'm in Canada, they're in the States, so I won't see it for a couple weeks.

Yeah ... HDMI DR or HDFury ... those will solve the problems of HDMI handshake usually.

Those are very useful... I don't even "need" one but I think I should get one...

Well, I ordered it on Sunday night, and it should be delivered today. They use DHL shipping from Taipei, Taiwan, and it's super fast. I had to pay an extra $19CAD in duties and taxes, big surprise, but if it works, I'll be a happy camper. Should have it by end of day today.

Got it working, and it's great. Here's what I did.

-Loaded a custom EDID off of the HDFury.com forum website. It's in the first post.
-It automatically goes to that setting, but I still wasn't getting a picture or sound.
-Got frustrated, and went to the website to post "I need help".
-While waiting for a response, I power cycled the NAS and receiver, by unplugging them and rebooting. Still nothing.
-Finally realized that the Dr. HDMI takes power from the HDMI signal (5V), I unplugged the cables to and from the device, and replugged them.
-BAM! Everything works. Lossless bitstream, 24Hz picture playback, and the video isn't distorted or colors blown out. It just modifies the handshake.
-Switched inputs on the receiver, tried other devices, went back to the NAS/Media Player input, no issues. It works great. I'm a happy camper.

Recommended for anyone who has HDMI handshake issues, great support on the website too. You can find pretty much anything on there.
