Can you live with screen waves?

Hello,

im looking at getting a projector screen to pull down over my current TV/Speaker setup.

I dont have very much space at the moment before i get my dedicated space in a few years.

I found a 84" screen that just fits into the area i have to work with but i was told i should get a tab tensioned screen to avoid getting waves in the screen.

When i looked at some tansioned screens this made the case length smaller meaning i could only fit a 73" screen.

As i only have a small area i would like the biggest screen possible, so if i get the 84" screen and get some waves is it easy to deal with?

Does it distract you/ get annoying or anything like that?

I lived with a cheap manual pull down for 4 years or so without any waves at all

BUT.....

I also hardly ever rolled it up. I would suggest to go ahead and get the manual pull down IF You can leave the screen down say when you go to bed/ while your away at work ,if your gone for the weekend etc.
That will keep your screen nice and flat.


I used a 100" 16x9 Elite manual pull down M100UWH I think its around $100.00

Nope, I would not be able to. That's why I got a fixed frame screen.

I'm a bit of a noob here, and this may come off as a dumb question, but (aesthetics aside) wouldn't a bit of weight added to the pull down bar be able to eliminate any waves? (or even line that would attach to the floor to provide tension?)

Again, sorry if this is a silly question, I'm looking into using a pull-down screen in the near future, and this is what I came up with when contemplating waves...

I have a manual pull down screen and have had it for 3 1/2 years. I have used my projector for just 198 hours in that time, so my screen is almost always rolled up. Yet, I have not seen anything noticeable that would look like waves in my screen. Then again, I think I have rather poor eyesight when it comes to these kind of things. My projector is only 720p, yet I have been fully satisfied with the PQ for those 3 1/2 years and don't feel 1080p is worth the investment for my needs (my opinion only.)

It seems that if you don't have a fixed frame screen, eventually you're going to acquire some type of waves no matter what tensioned screen you buy. I've had to have 3 screens replaced in the least 2 years due to waves. It's an elite cinetension screen. I was pretty pi$$ed off too.
I can't deal with waves and never will. Just knowing they're there, even if I couldn't see them, is enough to drive me crazy.

Do whatever you can do to get a fixed frame.

For a dedicated HT room, a fixed tension seems the best way to go and tends to keep screen taught for the long haul, from what I've read.
Something like this, even seems like a good deal...
I'm thinking of doing a make-shift masking for the vertical sides when watching 4:3 programs/films. Velvet covered Styrofoam seems to be what a lot do .

Just some ideas for myself...not looking to get projector and screen till next year, but starting on research now for ideas, lol

I have a 92" manual pull down and the waves distract me, especially when the image/camera is panning.

But I have no choice because my screen is half in front of a wall, half in an hallway (that is clear when I pull up the screen).

I'm beginning to think that maybe I could get a "fixed" screen that I could remove from hooks and then store it in another room when I'm not watching a movie.

My big question is how solid is the frame? Is it going to end up being slack and loose it's tension?

Same here. 92" as well. When I have some extra dough I'll get a fixed screen.

I tried this also but I could not make it work. The screen also needs to be taught from the sides which is why I plan on getting a tab tensioned screen in the future.
