For me, had several movie formats over the years and purchased quite a few titles in each format (LaserDisc, DVD, D-Theather and Blu-ray). Have rented most titles to see if they were worthy of purchase.
I am a try before I buy type person. No try (rental), no buy. Even Sony lets you preview UHD titles on the FMP-X10. |

I absolutely will not be buying into a format that requires online authentication. It's fraught with peril...
Peril for the consumer, that is. |

That is on of the nubs of the problem. Sony Did not release this particular item in Europe, instead launching the FMP-X5 with no service to back it up. Also it was crippled with no hard drive. Rights issues were stated for the lack of a service. So for UHD Blu-Ray I'm envisaging quite a problem in importing titles. Even if played on a USA player, with this online authentication cr4p it would probably still not play an imported title. |

I voted no (as in, HELL no!). Even with physical media, the studios want us to buy into that whole "you are not buying the movie, just the right to watch it" crap; in effect my entire library is leased...?!? By definition, if something is leased, the "true owner" can revoke that lease at any time (I would pay real money to see them try). Sorry, but I don't play that game...
In another thread, someone mentioned DIVX (the defunct format, not the codec), and drew the comparison between that failed format and this whole UHD authentication/limited play stuff. The difference is that, almost two decades ago the format failed because people knew what it was to actually own something. The current generation has been raised in a world where everything is web-based (the so-called "cloud"), and they are just fine with the idea of their "property" being at the mercy of some server owner over whom they have no control (even though they "paid" for it). The scary thing is that this might actually fly with the current mentality of J6P.... Last edited by HarcourtMudd; 04-29-2015 at 03:01 AM. |

Despite all the hype over downloading and streaming, here in the UK they are launching a dedicated vinyl chart as sales of this ancient physical media are soaring. Now I don't think this is wholly down to old folk. I think this newer generation is quite clued up on where they stand with digital rights and are choosing to buy vinyl for the albums they will cherish going forward. |

No, no and no.
I will not support this paranoid obsessive control studios are trying to take over responsible paying customers. I think as many people as possible should take the same oath, so that if they ever do such a thing, they will see the consequences of it. |

Hell, it was mentioned in another thread that the DRM may end up on regular Blu rays as well. And if that happens, I'll stop buying MOVIES all together. I might stock up on whatever favourites I don't have before the deal goes down and then I'll only buy second hands from then on, and new releases.... I won't buy. Might seem extreme, but there are certain abuses of consumer rights that I will not stand for.
