[Show spoiler]Episode One

03/05/15 Season 1 TV-14 D,L,S,V

Russ Skokie is abruptly woken up by the telephone, receiving news about his son from a Modesto police officer. He arrives at the airport and meets the officer, who takes him to identify the dead body of his son, Matt. After seeing Matt’s body, Russ excuses himself, sobbing and wailing in the privacy of the bathroom. The officer later informs him that his son’s neighbor called police, who then went to the home and found two victims: his son and his son’s wife, Gwen, who survived but is in critical condition. Police have a lead on a car that was in the vicinity at the time of the shooting, driven by a Hispanic male.

Hector Tontz purchases expensive headphones. After paying for them with his card, he is referred to as “Mr. Skokie.” Tony Gutierrez lurks in the background as his sister Jenny fools around with her boyfriend after school. When their father Alonzo Gutierrez arrives home, he sends her boyfriend away and reprimands Jenny. A single father, he is strict with his children. Meanwhile, Carter Nix and Aubry Taylor fool around, doing drugs at a party when Aubry leaves him to use the restroom. She is approached by two girls, who ask her if she is carrying. When she denies them, they beat her. Carter comes to her rescue.

Gwen’s parents, Tom and Eve Carlin, see their daughter in the hospital and meet with Russ and his estranged ex-wife, Barb Hanlon. Barb suggests they talk to a reporter to keep their kids’ story public; Tom refuses. At Alonzo’s auto shop, Tony helps his dad with an orange-colored car. He then tries to persuade his dad to let his sister off the hook, resulting in a lecture about Tony’s future kids. Hector arrives at a house full of thugs with the headphones. When he belittles the head thug for buying stolen things because he’s too lazy to steal himself, the thug gives Hector some advice of his own.

That night, Tony stands outside the auto shop with the orange car; he is waiting for someone. Hector arrives, handing him money and driving off with the car. Later, the car is pulled over by police, with Tony in the driver’s seat. The officer has a word with him and takes his information, going back to his police car. Suddenly, another police car arrives, sirens blazing. The officers take Tony down to the station for questioning.

At a bar, Carter and Aubry split a beer. A man in the next booth locks eyes with Aubry; she knows what he wants. Hesitating, she leaves Carter and sits next to the man in the booth. Realizing what is happening, Carter immediately goes over, pulling Aubry away and out of the bar. Russ and Barb meet with a therapist to talk about Matt and Gwen. Barb airs out her family’s dirty laundry and expresses racist sentiment. In the car, she and Russ get into an argument. It’s revealed Russ was a gambling addict who gambled away the family’s money, with Barb raising her sons as a single mother.

At the station, Alonzo arrives to assist in some more questions about Tony and the car. As Alonzo presses his son for the truth, Tony talks back, finally admitting that was their car. He reveals he rented the car to guy at school named Adam, who knew someone who was willing to rent the car for $50 each time – Hector. Carter visits a man, looking to score. Inside the man’s house, Carter pulls a gun on him, beating him before stealing drugs from the man’s pocket.

Hector is at a sporting goods store when he realizes he is being made to wait for a reason. He attempts to make a run for it, but is too late. Police arrive and chase him down, shooting him in the leg. He wakes up in the hospital, handcuffed to the bed and being interrogated about Sunday’s events. Hector points fingers at two meth addicts he knows, Carter and Aubry, and they are arrested. Waiting for the police to come back with information from Tony’s phone, Alonzo reprimands Tony for erasing his texts, leading to an argument. The police come back and arrest Tony for murder.

Russ and Barb are informed that four suspects are in jail: two who facilitated and one they believe to be the shooter. Barb is insistent on seeing him. Looking through a glass door, she sees Carter being led away by police, locking eyes with him. Meanwhile, Russ meets with an investigator, who informs a surprised Russ that Matt was a drug dealer.

03/12/15 Season 1 TV-14 D,L,V

At the courthouse, Carter is being arraigned of multiple charges. Meanwhile, Tom and Eve are at church. A lawyer informs Alonzo and Jenny of Tony’s offenses. Meanwhile, Tony is struggling in juvie with the other delinquents who are terrorizing him. Russ meets with Matt’s friend, Scott, who divulges that Matt was having problems but refuses to elaborate, leading Russ to believe that his son was truly involved in drugs. Aubry is released and approached by a prosecutor from the D.A.’s office who tries to get her to testify against Carter. She maintains he didn’t do it.

Barb and Russ meet with Tom and Eve and discuss what will happen when Gwen wakes up. Barb expresses her upset they didn’t attend the arraignment. Russ reveals to Barb that a detective told him drugs were found at Matt’s house and that he also talked to one of Matt’s friends. Barb refuses to believe it, dismissing Russ. Aubry tries to see Carter, but is denied because she’s a felon. Tony reports the bullying, but nothing is done because there was no physical contact. At the Gutierrez house, Jenny is angry at Alonzo for not doing more to help Tony, accusing him of wishing they were white.

Aubry returns to her and Carter’s place only to get evicted by her landlord. Russ and Tom meet and talk civilly; Tom encourages Russ to fight Barb to do what’s right. Meanwhile, Barb meets with Detective Thompson, the detective who accused her son of being a drug dealer. Upon seeing that the detective is African American, she refuses to speak with her. At a restaurant, Aubry pockets an elderly couple’s tip and buys drugs at a club. She trips and dreams that she and Carter are reunited. They kiss, while cars are falling from the sky. The sound of crashing wakes her up – she passed out outdoors.

Hector is informed that he is being deported back to Mexico for murder. Tony is interviewed by his probation officer and admits that he wanted to do something to make his father angry. Aubry calls her father and asks for money; he refuses, reasoning that she’ll only use it to buy drugs. Later, she is given the money in cash and gets the presidential suite at a hotel. While Eve is at Gwen’s side, Tom is given Gwen’s lab results and he’s not pleased at the report. Russ tries to break into Matt’s house but is refused entry by police.

Tom informs Eve that Gwen’s “rape kit” results came back. There was no evidence that Carter assaulted her, but there was evidence that she’d had consensual sex with several partners. Tom has a hard time stomaching the results, refusing to believe that was the daughter he raised. Eve shows him a photo of a happy and healthy Gwen, telling him that’s how he remembers her. Barb turns to an activist group for support and has a breakdown when talking about Matt. She is determined to do whatever is necessary to defend her son’s memory.

[Show spoiler]Episode 3

03/19/15 Season 1 TV-14 D,L,V

It’s been a few weeks since the arraignment of the accused. At the Gutierrez house, Alonzo is feeling Jenny’s anger with her silent treatment. On his way out the door to work, he is met by a news crew in front of his home. Tony is picked on in juvie, but gains a protector in Edgar. Barb and Nancy, the head of the Victims Rights Group, meet with Soderbergh to try to get an additional special circumstance charge against Carter. Russ applies for a job at a garden center, which he later gets. The news crew cuts their interview with Alonzo, who is caught on camera making a controversial comment.
At the hospital, Hector is approached by a gang member who wants him to steal drugs. Barb gets a new hairstyle, which she hates. Outside of the hair salon, she gets served with papers by Russ to take possession of Matt’s body, which she refuses to accept. Aubry explains her obsession with magazine photos of interracial couples, which helps her see the world differently. Her father arrives. Although an addict, she is from a middle class background and was originally adopted as a foster child. Alonzo’s brother-in-law Oscar pays the Gutierrez house a visit. Oscar tries to give Alonzo constructive criticism and help out, but Alonzo just gets angry at him.
Tony’s probation officer meets with Jenny for some questioning. The officer pries about their home life; she reveals to him that she has to take care of everything at home. Meanwhile, Carter’s sister Aliyah arrives and wishes him a happy birthday. She reveals she found out about him by Celeste – his ex-fiance whom he left. Aliyah and Carter do not see eye to eye, as she is very religious and doesn’t approve of her brother’s lifestyle. She offers to help him, but when he asks her find Aubry for him and she refuses, he rejects her presence.
Russ and Barb both try to take possession of Matt’s body, but until Gwen wakes up, his body will be placed in storage. Jenny gets invited by a boy from school to a block party. She initially declines, but is easily convinced. Tom gets word from a lawyer to possibly get permission to look through Gwen’s emails and is relieved and hopeful over the news. Eve comes clean and admits she knew that Gwen was having sex with other guys, much to the shock and dismay of Tom. She had come to Eve because Matt got involved with drugs and was around people who scared Gwen.
Jenny and her friends go the block party, letting loose and dancing. The cops arrive and ask to see their IDs; everyone obliges except for Jenny. She makes more trouble for herself by her refusal, angering the police. When she finally hands it over, she is cleared, but visibly shaken. Upon arriving home, Alonzo questions her whereabouts and she throws him her usual attitude. When he admits he’s afraid of saying anything to her, she hugs her father and bursts into tears. He comforts her, promising Tony will come home and everything will be good.
Barb receives a call from Nancy: the DA’s office will NOT be adding an additional special circumstances charge against Carter. She is devastated. Alonzo meets with Tony’s probation officer, who informs him they will not release Tony to him. He recommends Tony stay in juvie for counseling and observation, which crushes Alonzo.

Whaaaaat? After watching the first two episodes, this has become my favorite new series of the year. So insane and tense. Not to mention, this is some of the best acting I've seen in a major network series.

Then again, I love socially aware tv/movies that deal with race, gender, political, and class issues.

I love that it's addressing all of these issues, but I feel the way that it's executed could have used a subtler hand. It feels over-the-top or contrived I think - I could be wrong about that though. I think a director like Steve McQueen would have been better to reign it in like he did with 12 Years a Slave. The acting is very strong (except for
[Show spoiler]the guy who gets shot in the leg
).

[Show spoiler]04/02/15 Season 1 TV-14 D,L,V

Allowed to enter Matt and Gwen’s house, Russ and Mark go into the home for the first time since the murder. The house is a mess and there is blood everywhere. Russ retrieves a suit for Matt to be buried in for his funeral. Carter is being released by the judge but is bound by conditions, including wearing an ankle monitor at all times. Aliyah greets him upon his release from prison, offering to take him to get food – provided that it’s not pork. Tony, Alonzo and Jenny go to church and are met with glares from fellow churchgoers. Afterward, Tony blows up at Alonzo for suggesting they work on the car together.

Carter and Aliyah arrive at his new apartment. When he inquires about who is paying for the place, she informs him that he is, as he will be starting his new job for the Masjid. Aubry continues pretending that she is sober and convinces her father to rent her a car. Hector gets his bandage removed and meets with Soderbergh, who tries to bargain with him. Hector goes off on Soderbergh, realizing he has nothing on Carter except for what Hector can provide. Aubry and Carter reunite when she visits him at his new place. The two reminisce about the first time they met. Later, they discuss his situation.

The family buries Matt, with Mark shooting video of Russ planting flowers at Matt’s grave. In the car on the way back, Barb and Matt talk about their family. Barb vents to him about Tom and Eve not attending Matt’s funeral. Tony calls Edgar’s cousin Luis and meets up with him; the two become fast friends. Carter wakes up to discover Aubry cut off his ankle monitor and panics. Aubry explains her plan, which involves using her rental car to go to the Canadian border and getting smuggled into Vietnam, where Carter will be safe.

At his new job at the nursery, Russ chats with fellow coworker Lisa about drama. Meanwhile, Mark shows Gwen video footage from the funeral. Tony hangs out with Luis, who gives him advice on how to be smart. With Aubry driving, Carter questions her plan, but she is more concerned with getting another beer. While saying they are always welcome in church, Father Peña discourages Alonzo and the family from attending Sunday mass. Mark pays a visit to Barb and tells her he is getting married. While she is initially thrilled, he hesitates to tell her his fiancé Richelle is a woman of color.

Jenny is walking home from school when Joaquin and his friends follow her. When Joaquin starts talking trash about Tony, she turns around and hits him. He retaliates, throwing her to the ground and punching her repeatedly until his friends intervene. Aubry and Carter are on the road; she is getting anxious for a hit. Changing her mind about the plan, she wants to turn back and get drugs. She freaks out and gets into a shouting match with Carter. He puts her in the backseat and drives them back to Modesto. At the hotel, Aubry discovers her father isn’t there, but her brother Brian is. He gives her money.

Aubry and Carter go to a drug house, looking to score. She does drugs, while Carter watches from a distance. When a fellow junkie recognizes Carter as the one who attacked him and ripped him off, a fight ensues. Aubry comes to Carter’s defense and slices a guy’s throat in the process. They run off to a cheap motel where Carter washes up. Aubry does more drugs and ends up overdosing. Carter calls 911 in tears, pleading for Aubry to get up. EMTs arrive and Carter is arrested again, taken away in a squad car.

[Show spoiler]04/09/15 Season 1 TV-14 D,L,V

The news of Carter fleeing is making the rounds and everyone on both sides is upset. The authorities search Carter’s apartment, tearing it apart and leaving it shambles. Aliyah is angry at the authorities as well as Carter for hurting people, including those at the temple who donated for his bail money, which has now been forfeited. Upon hearing the news, Russ is furious that Carter was able to run around, especially with all of his family now in Modesto. Meanwhile, Barb expresses her sentiment on a news show about Carter’s escape, making some eyebrow-raising comments.

Seeing Jenny’s face bruised, Alonzo tries talking to his daughter, but she dismisses him. Tony also attempts to get information out of his sister, but she tells him not to worry about her and to go to counseling with Alonzo. Aubry wakes up in the hospital after overdosing and is cuffed to the gurney. Russ rants to Mark about Carter’s fleeing; Mark goes on a rant himself, admitting he thinks his mother is hateful and that Russ was an awful father. After Mark asks him to leave, Russ has an emotional breakdown over his son’s comments.

Aliyah goes to court and can’t find out what happened to her brother. At counseling, Alonzo speaks to the counselor while Tony sits and glares at his father. He clearly wants to say something in spite of his father. When the counselor asks him if there’s anything he wants to say, he lets it all out. He expresses concern over Jenny and is upset at the fact that all Alonzo wants to do is talk about the past. Despite Eve's hesitation, Detective Palmer wants to interview Gwen about what happened on the night of Matt’s murder – a statement from her would seal Carter’s conviction. Unfortunately, she has lost all of her memory of the attack.

At his work, Russ finds comfort in a co-worker named Lisa, who commiserates with him. Aubry’s father Michael informs her that the authorities want to make a deal with her: give a statement against Carter and they’ll reduce her charges. Experiencing withdrawals from drugs, she screams at him to leave the room. Speaking with Brother Timothy, Aliyah admits feeling guilt over not being there for Carter to talk to. She regrets not giving him the plate of ribs like he wanted and not being the sister he needed to confide in.

Aubry’s brother Brian visits, assisting her in drinking water. He gives his two cents, advising her to listen to their father and speak to the police. He encourages her to come clean. Meanwhile, Barb has dinner with her new friend Jessie, a hairdresser, and the two discuss Mark’s fiancée. Soderbergh speaks to Hector and offers him a new deal in exchange for official testimony against Carter. Seeing their desperation, Hector demands full immunity and to be placed in witness protection – he wants a clean record and a clean start.

Tony finds out from Jenny’s boyfriend that she was beat up by a guy named Joaquin. With the help of his new friends, Tony gets vengeance for his sister, beating Joaquin with a pipe. The incident is captured on video by one of Tony’s new friends, who is using the footage for bragging rights. Stevie, the man that Carter beat up and stole drugs from, gives a statement that leads to Sorenson stating that new evidence has surfaced. The evidence indicates Carter may have singled out Matt Skokie based on his race. The murder is now officially being investigated as a hate crime. Barb is quite satisfied. Hector is moved from the county lock up prior to him giving testimony against Carter.

[Show spoiler]04/16/15 Season 1 TV-14 D,L,S,V
Hector is placed in a better facility rehabilitating, while Carter is in solitary confinement and infuriated at his situation. At the Gutierrez house, Alonzo tries to talk to his kids but they’re both dismissive. Aubry is pressed by her family and her lawyer to turn against Carter so she can get out of jail. At his workplace, Russ is fired for not admitting he was a former convict. Mark’s fiancée Richelle arrives in Modesto, with plans to meet Barb. Meanwhile, Hector is set to give his testimony in court against Carter in return for his immunity. He confides in his lawyer about the situation in Sinoloa, admitting he shot someone in defense for another.

Tony gets arrested for beating Jenny’s attacker, Joaquin. The video footage that was taken that night ends up in the hands of the authorities. When Alonzo learns of his son’s arrest, he accuses the authorities of hounding his son. He is shown the recording of Tony and realizes that his son messed up big time. Barb meets Richelle and is euphemistic in questions, while Richelle very directly tells Barb she loves Mark and will marry him. Barb strikes back, planting the idea that Mark is marrying Richelle to get back at her. It’s a tense and shaky meeting, as both women are very headstrong.

In confinement, Carter is being tortured and abused. Meeting with Aliyah, all Carter can do is ask about Aubry. When a frustrated Aliyah lectures him about only caring for his partner, he reveals that Aubry was there for him at his lowest point, when he was still working at his accounting job. He tried to commit suicide by hanging himself – a fact that shocks Aliyah – but Aubry saved him. Battered and broken, he finally begs his sister for help.

Richelle meets up with Mark and tells him about her meeting with Barb. Alonzo and Jenny visit Tony, who is now back in juvie. The visit does not go well, with Alonzo storming out. When Jenny finds out that Tony beat Joaquin to protect her, she also leaves Tony on a bad note. Meanwhile, Brother Timothy and Aliyah are given incriminating information about Matt and his anti-government ideals and lifestyle. The information they find can slander Matt and Gwen. Timothy and Aliyah turn to the mayor’s office with the information, but are told nothing else could be done for them.

Aubry’s lawyer presses her to testify against Carter in order to save herself. She hands him an envelope with instructions to get it to someone and asks him to gather her family. Jenny runs off to her Uncle Oscar’s house and decides to live with her uncle and aunt for a while. Alonzo is offended and angry, but she insists he help Tony. Meanwhile, Russ turns to Tom about getting fired and asks him to help give Barb perspective, but Tom refuses to deal with her.

With her family gathered in a room, Aubry tells the investigator about her brother Brian sexually abusing her growing up. A furious Brian storms out, with their mother trailing him. Aubry states she is mentally unfit to testify against anyone. Once alone together, her father questions why she would lie about her brother. She reasons that she did it for Carter, who saved her. Meanwhile, Carter receives the envelope from Aubry: it’s a magazine photo of an interracial couple. The photo gives Carter hope. He meets with Aliyah, and while they continue to butt heads about Aubry, he admits to her that he can’t take being alone anymore. This drives Aliyah to make a case for a peaceful march in support of her brother.

It looks like season one is not available on Blu or DVD. Seems weird since season two begins airing in a few days and this is a major network show (ABC).

Anyone have any idea what the deal is here? I'd like to check the show out.

American Crime episode guide
Season 2 

The second season of American Crime is set in the U.S. Midwest -- representative of the canvas that is America -- at two high schools, one public and one private. Issues of sexual orientation and socioeconomic disparity come to a boil when lurid photos of a high school boy, Taylor Blaine, are posted on social media following a school party. Circumstances become more complicated when Taylor accuses two players on an elite private high school’s championship basketball team, Kevin LaCroix and Eric Tanner, of drugging, assaulting and then posting the pictures of him online.

I did find these, however I've never heard of these retailers (I'll/I'd be patient & wait for a more familiar retailer )!

I was a bit wary after how season 1 ended, but this season had been downright fantastic so far. This and The Leftovers have had amazing turnarounds for their second seasons.

I missed the first season but since the seasons are standalone I decided to check this one out. I watched 4 episodes last night and 2 tonight to get caught up. I think it's great so far. The next episode looks really good but I'm going to be really sad if Taylor kills himself.

I wanted to catch the first season, but I missed it as well. Is it available to stream anywhere? I couldn't find anything, an it strangely doesn't seem to have a DVD release either (I wouldn't even expect a BD). Seems like the only option is to purchase digitally at the moment.

Anyway, I've been watching this season, though, and it is really good. (Generally, from what I've seen on the Internet, reception seems to be better this season.) It's shot and acted very well.

It takes me out of the show whenever they censor the curses, though. It's so weird. Since it is a network show, why even have those words in there knowing it will be censored?

Also wondering how the storyline at the public school is going to tie in with everything else, as so far it seems so far removed from the main storyline.

I'm not sure if what happened in tonight's episode was better or worse than if he'd actually just killed himself. Man was that heartbreaking. Poor kid and his poor mom. I feel really bad for them.

It took me a while to realize they were cutting out the curse words. I kept thinking my DVR was acting up and it was annoying me. But then I realized it was whenever someone was going to say something objectionable. It really is annoying.

Season 2 isn't even over yet and it's already one of the best seasons of television I ever seen in my entire life. Connor Jessup's acting SLAYS me.
