Default What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) - Aug 6, 2019

This originally started out as an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, but since that time Ira Behr has mentioned that Shout Factory will be distributing the documentary for them.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/w...ace-nine-doc#/

Shout Factory has listed two versions of the documentary on Blu-ray although it's unclear exactly what the campaign backers will be receiving and whether it will be a third release.

Hi Antony! Shout hasn't released list of bonus features yet, so we're not able to be too specific except to say -- everything our film team edited/produced will be included in the Backer Disk set. Shout likely will have one separate piece that they've produced separately from us on their bonus disk set, which we didn't create / don't own. But almost everything will be included in your disks. It's jam-packed, so stay tuned for announcement of those details soon!

Special Edition: (2-Disc)

Wish the 2 disc was available on Amazon. Guess it's the single disc release for me.

Thanks for this, I had no idea there was going to be a two-disc edition.

It seems like the obvious solution here is...just send backers the two-disc release. Unless they guaranteed that backers would receive exclusive content on their Blu-rays.

Won't work - Shout region lock.

Not unless they need to. Based on the subtitles provided, it's unlikely that these discs will be locked, even if they officially say Region A.

The Special Edition may cost you about 14 bucks more. It's 7 just for shipping.

I was going to go with the standard edition, but the making of doc is tempting as well...Hmm...

Loved this film. Day 1 purchase for me. I saw it at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood and the HD restored footage is glorious. The doc itself was very in depth and more personal than I expected.
Here's hoping if not the whole series that we get at least a 'Best of" blu ray release with 10 eps down the road completely remastered. This doc though was something special.

Received my backer edition today. Kind of disgusted that the producers agreed to let Shout create exclusive content for their release that the backers wouldn't receive without buying it all over again (especially considering how much more backers paid)...

Regardless, at least the cover for the backer edition is a million times better than the Shout release. Ira's a brilliant producer and showrunner but his mug on the cover doesn't quite feel right (or appealing to the eye).

I'll throw this out there for those who can't get enough DS9 behind the scenes content. There was a companion book to the series where the writer of the book was hired before the series began and he literally spent the entire seven years of the show wandering behind the scenes and talking to the staff. It's the best TV show companion book I've ever read, freaking brilliant. Most companion books provide little new information and/or just blindly praise the show. In this one, everyone is honest and clear eyed on the good and the bad of all that happened. It's out of print, but you can still find copies for a decent price. Whatever you pay, it's worth it. Any pics of the front and back of the Backer edition? Also, what kind of stuff is on the technical subtitle track?

It was great seeing this in the theater and I would love to have the special edition. However I'm not sure almost 40 dollars is worth it. I mean it's 30 for the disc and 7 for shipping. That seems a tad expensive.

The 2 disc edition from Shout is limited, so you can take the chance that it won't sell out before it gets a price cut (and know that titles don't get discounted by very much anymore in Shout's store) or guarantee yourself a copy and buy now.

For what it's worth, $38 was the cost for a backer edition.

The team have specifically stated that the Indiegogo set is the only region free version. The Shout ones will be locked. No doubt to allow them to sell the rights to Region B separately if they can.

I am a backer as well, and I'm not really all that pleased with the situation regarding the home video releases. Given that they not only asked for $ from fans, but then asked for even more $ from fans (for the high def transfer of some of the material from the show's original negative) it is kind of irritating to know that there are multiple editions of this now available. The backers should have been given every bit of content created for this release. We're not going to see a dime of money from the home video sales or the inevitable streaming deal that they will get out of this.

Just ordered 2 SE copies, 1 for me and 1 for my Dad, should make a great bday gift for him. Seems to still be plenty of them left.

I do agree backers got the shaft with the SE, but that's true of almost all these things.
