Australia Stephen King's Apt Pupil

Todd Bowden is learning about the Holocaust in high school, and recognises an old photograph of a concentration camp officer as an old man in his neighborhood. He confronts the man, Kurt Dussander, with his knowledge. Obsessed with the atrocities Dussander committed during the war, Todd begins to blackmail the old man: in exchange for the teenager's silence, Dussander must reveal his evil past. As Todd probes the old man's buried memories, indications of his evil begin to re-emerge. A game of psychological warfare begins that spirals out of control.

^ Blocked in my country.

I haven't seen this film since the days of VHS (I remember it being good though), but I do recall reading an article online about how some (or all) of the male extras felt extremely uncomfortable when told to drop their underwear for the shower scene. Apparently there was no indication nudity was needed, and a 'behind the scenes' photographer was snapping away.

run a VPN here.... which might be killing access to this on Youtube.

The film has 'that history' - and sadly Brad didn't make it past 25....... one wonders if Singer would be keen to talk about it much anymore ???

Nice to see a region b release but what is it with Umbrellas aversion to 5 channel audio. The Image blu had and the PQ was good. Will stick with that.

Its interesting.

The Image Blu-ray, Col/Tristar DVD, and even the laserdisc all offered 5.1 audio.

Umbrella now only offering 2.0. I am not sure this is the type of movie that truly needs 5.1, but I wonder why they were unable to get 5.1 given every past release had it?

On another note, this was released in theaters as Dolby Surround (i.e. essentially what's on the Umbrella disc) and SDDS, but never got a DD5.1 theatrical release.

Color saturation is also pumped up on the umbrella for some colors, and it leans towards red instead of the green the Image leans toward.

Has anyone gotten the Umbrella release and watched it to check out the sound? Very strange thing about Umbrella--I purchased their release of Outpost because there's no US release. It's identified as only 2.0 audio, but when I played it on my system, while it also showed 2.0 when I hit the info button on my player, the audio was just as split into all my speakers as the 5.1 US DVD--voices front and center, and left/right splits with back immersive surround effects, so I don't know what that's about.

Is your player or receiver set to some sort of Pro Logic or DTS:X mode?

No, i have the faux surround option turned off, and even when it's on, it pushes dialogue into the back speakers along with the rest of the audio track. Either way, are Pro Logic or DTS X capable of taking a 2.0 source and splitting it into 5 channels?

Yeah, or 7 for a 7.1 setup with ProLogic II-X. It usually keeps dialogue nicely centered too, unless it's deliberately panned to one channel. Also, 2.0 mixes usually have matrixed surround information which is unfolded if you use reguar Pro-Logic (which mimics the old Dolby Surround setup with 3 front channels and 1 rear mono channel split across all rear surrounds).

I'll have to try the disc on my older system that I moved to a different room and see if it splits the same way. Meanwhile, I got a copy of Umbrella's Apt Pupil today and had the same experience--I compared it to my 5.1 DVD copy, and the 2.0 sound is split exactly the same as if it used the exact same audio track. I'm becoming a huge fan of my newest surround receiver...
