The third member of our team doesn't get nearly as much exposure as he should. I'm pleased that Jack Theakston will join us for this interview.
You've enjoyed his contributions to 3-D RARITIES and Jack is responsible for finding the earliest extant 3-D footage, circa 1922. He'll share the story of those amazing discoveries on the show! Cyan/right ![]() |

Thanks Interdimensional. I would've missed it if you didn't post that.
![]() "Now when you make a dual strip print-" I heard on the broadcast, now sounds like Rob is talking or Greg. I heard the words dual interlock. Jack on another line it sounds like. The announcer has a higher pitch to his voice. Good stuff on 3D. ![]() EDIT: Was able to hear 75% of the show, very good interviews and history of 3D, preservation, lost footage of 3D, the current success of 3D in theaters for the past 7+ years, etc. I also liked the part explaining why Walt Disney didn't get involved with 3D in part because of WWII. Rob, Greg, great information on 3D, thank you! ![]() Last edited by Zivouhr; 05-12-2016 at 02:00 AM. |

I had to break off listening in the last half hour, but I expect to hear the whole thing tomorrow when I download the program for a perfectly reasonable 99 cents.
I must say this: God bless him, Stu Shostak sounds like a warm and enthusiastic person, but it is very obvious that he has never before now devoted one full minute to thinking about the art and science of 3-D movies. I'm quite sure he would be the first to admit that. At least he went to the very best sources of information on the subject for this podcast, and for that I am truly thankful. :-) |

I listened to the whole show. Very informative and very entertaining. The 3 hours went by fast.
I knew that technical issues affected the films of 1950's, but I didn't know how bad it was until I listened to this show. The fact that the 3-D premiere's of House of Wax and Dial M were severely affected was surprising to me. Stu seemed very surprised when Greg told him that digital 3-D is still doing very well in theaters despite lackluster support by TV manufacturers. |

I had the Castle cut-down of Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, too. My brother inherited all those 8mm's and still has them. First time I saw it was on TV, either WNEW or WOR 1964-5-ish. But after listening to your description of Universal's new 4K restoration at the original (darker) timing you've got me excited to see it. Any idea what their plans are for that?

That's the one. Or rather one of them. The cover art alone makes me nostalgic. Makes me feel like watching the DVD tonight. Isn't it strange how the preoccupations of one's childhood can stay with you your entire life. Except the preoccupation evolves as one grows older into a professional expertise. Plus you managed to hold onto the outer box and keep it in nice condition.
That was an informative discussion for us listeners, and I hope a productive one for The 3-D Film Archive. I may comment further after I listen to it again. Bob you forgot to mention your background in photochemistry and as a labman at Technicolor, two facts which add greatly to your expertise. |
