USA A New Leaf (1971) 4K UHD (Cinématographe Films)

Vinegar Syndrome via its Cinématographe Films imprint will be releasing A New Leaf (1971) on 4K UHD! The Limited Edition will come in a Mediabook packaging, and is limited to 5,000 copies.

Quote:
This special limited edition J-card MediaBook slipcase (designed by Michael DeForge) is limited to 5,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Note: this release is available to be purchased on its own, or bundled with the hardcover book Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie Courogen (book details can be seen below). This Limited Edition Slipcase + Book bundle is limited to 100 units.

Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome's Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

Henry Graham (Walter Matthau, The Bad News Bears), a descendant of a wealthy New York family, has exhausted his inheritance, leaving him near penniless, much to the dismay of his uncle Harry (James Coco, Murder By Death), who refuses his request for a loan. Upon suggestion of his valet driver Harold (George Rose, The Flesh and the Fiends), Henry devises a plot to marry wealthy professor Henrietta Lowell (played by writer/director Elaine May) and murder her, becoming the beneficiary of her fortune. Along the way, Henry faces various obstacles, including unexpectedly falling in love.

The first feature film to be written and directed by noted playwright and comedian Elaine May (Mikey and Nicky, Ishtar), A NEW LEAF is a calling card of the highest order. Showcasing May as a triple threat, behind and in front of the camera, and offering a canvas for her rapid fire, often acerbic, humor that would define her work. Nominated for two Golden Globe Awards in 1972 – Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Best Actress for Elaine May – and adopted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2019, A NEW LEAF is one of the great American comedy films of the 1970s and is often cited as the crowning achievement of May’s illustrious, albeit often controversial, career. Cinématographe is proud to present the world 4K UHD debut of Elaine May’s romantic comedy masterpiece, in a new restoration from the original 35mm camera negative.

directed by: Elaine May
starring: Walter Matthau, Elaine May, Jack Weston, George Rose, James Coco, Dorris Roberts, Renée Taylor
1971 / 102 min / 1.85:1 / English DTS-HD MA 1.0

Yes Cinematographe is finally doing a Walther Matthau title, and it's an underrated dark comedy count me in. This is a very big, and popular film that hasn't gotten the best releases in the past, and now Cinematographe is finally giving it the respect it deserves. I also don't have to buy the Olive Blu-Ray for this either, which is very barebones. This is a major upgrade for this title, and it deserves that upgrade.

Nice that it is getting a 4K UHD.

I will be picking this one up for sure. I like to support the 4K UHDs releases.

Will retire the Olive Signature BLU.

Eh heh heh whoops I meant big, and popular not underrated an underrated Walther Matthau film would be something like Buddy Buddy, or Plaza Suite, or a number of his other films that nobody really talks about.

This is the title with the black background and the greenish yellow leaf. The We're No Angels title will be revealed on Monday. I guess Justin switched them around, and put a New Leaf to be revealed first on Thursday while We're No Angels got moved to Monday. It's a bit bizarre, and kind of strange. Originally a New Leaf was supposed to be revealed on Monday while the remake of We're No Angels was supposed to be revealed on Thursday. It honestly confuses the heck out of me when Justin does this.

I kept seeing this title getting tossed around as a possibility but I wasn’t familiar with it. That trailer got my attention though! This looks great.

I might not say underrated per se, but also the more people that know about A New Lead the better.

Just fired up my Criterion Mikey and Nickey, it’s serendipitous! Once of these days, somebody is going to work out the rights to The Heartbreak Kid, but this will do for now!

Extremely unlikely I know, but I wonder if anyone has finally managed to find the missing 80mins and this release will contain May's original cut. I guess they'd have made a bit of a bigger deal about the pre-announcement if that was the case though.

One of my all-time favorite films. I know we’ll never get the original cut or any participation from May, so hopefully they can port over the Olive special features.

And if you’re a fan of May, check out Miss May Does Not Exist. Fantastic book on her career, from Nichols and May to present.

Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie Courogen is essential. It made me go to Lincoln Center and watch her performance in The Waverly Gallery.

I haven't seen this film, but want to. It's been a bit since I've read the book, but was there a reason to believe the cut footage doesn't exist? The Paramount Presents line has proved that the vaults are pretty vast, between the deleted scenes from Ragtime and the alt ending of Double Jeopardy, I'm hopeful they can find something.

One of the execs oversaw a pretty major search in the archives in the 90s but they didn't find anything. I don't know if anyone has tried looking again since - May herself probably doesn't want anything to do with it and I don't know if there are any "film detectives" searching high and low for it.

Most people seem to think it's pretty perfect as it is, and I know there is a growing camp that believe it wouldn't work at 3hrs and with the deleted scenes (the content of which are pretty well documented) put back in. I have seen it used as a "the studio was right" example on more than one occasion, but without May's original cut to compare to no one can really be sure.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the least that the 3 hour cut doesn’t “work”, but I would still love, love, love to see the footage from it in some form. Somewhat similarly but in the opposite direction, I would also like to see the studio cut of May’s Mikey and Nicky that was briefly released in theaters before it was recut by May and has (as far as I can tell) never been released again in any form.

Much like Breathless, this is a Cinématographe release I’ll get at some point, but since it already has a pretty decent Blu, I can wait for a sale unless there’s something earth-shattering about it (ie. the additional footage).

It’s generally fine as it is but I would be curious how the longer cut handles the third act; to me, I think this where the film kind of suffers because of how they cut out the “murder” subplot and it just feels “rushed”.

May at one point had it under her bed or something but I'm guessing that was during it's editing. She actually had final cut in her contract but Paramount was able to get around it somehow.

The story of George Rose’s (Harold the Butler) demise is truly horrific.

This is one of the few films that can make me laugh out loud, first time I saw the proposal scene I was in tears.

Mogen David’s extra heavy Malaga wine all ‘round 🍷.
