hdtv ? - Blu-ray Forum

Hi Guy's I have a quick question I am hoping someone has a quick answer... here is my set up:

50 plasma hdtv hitachi
bell express vu hdtv dvr
Ps3 bd player
onkyo amp

I connect the sat receiver and ps3 to the plasma via hdmi
I connect the sound from each to the onkyo amp with optic cables

Here is my question when I watch an hd broadcast via satelite(nfl football ect) the program uses my entire screen 16X9... but when I watch either a dvd or bd disk, I have black bars top and bottom. Could someone please explain the difference between the two signals?
