Default Pioneer Kuro dying?

I've had my 1150 Kuro for quite a while now and love it. Over the years I've noticed a minor issue that continues to get worse. The best way to describe it is as small specs of white like snow or static. It started mainly at the top of the screen only, but now has moved down to cover more screen. It is pretty noticeable during dark scenes. it occurs on all sources, so I'm pretty sure it is the TV itself. What could this be? Is the TV progressively "dying"?

Pioneer Kuros are old TVs, and whatever the problem is and it's getting worse, I wouldn't spend a lot of money to get it fixed. If you take it to the shop, they may not be able to get replacement parts for it anymore, and if so, the labor is going to cost a lot more than the part. I would start looking for a new HDTV!

How old is that TV? How long has it been used, and how much on a daily basis?

Sorry to hear, mate.

It sounds like a power supply problem, and not worth trying to repair. Hate to see a Kuro go down.

Any recommendations? LG OLED looks nice, but $$$!

It's gotta be 6yrs old or so. I'd guess an average of 6-8hrs a day.

Yeah, not looking to repair it. I was just curious what that issue might be caused from.

A new power supply is significantly cheaper than buying a brand new TV. At least with the kuro you already know the performance is guaranteed.

But you have an 8G correct? 768 resolution? In that case i guess it's worth looking for a new TV.

If i had any issues with my 9G elite i would definitely rather spend money to fix it over buying any of these 4K LCD's. OLED's premium price is not worth the PQ difference over the kuro at the moment. Which it doesn't do exactly everything better anyway.

Its not all bad, LCD/LED's have come along way since you bought you plasma 6 years ago. I ran an experiment in the "Pio Kuro plasma better than 4K" thread on this website and found that the LCD/LED have closed the gap between plasma to the point where I was scoring them as equals. And with the High Dynamic Range, there are areas where current 4K's are better than old plasmas. (post #112 if you want to read the hard data)

I have been looking for a good deal to upgrade my 50" panny plasma to a 65" set and am focusing on the Vizio P-series. Read the million Vizio P-series pages on the AVS forum and look at the Rtings reviews.

Go to you local AV store and see for yourself.

Seems like LG's new series so far has drastically improved most of the prior complaints. Not 100% but to the point where it doesn't bother the vast majority of previous Kuro owners any more. By far most of the people so far who upgraded from 9G Kuro's on to the G6 and E6 are saying they are glad they are glad they did.

Plus OLED right now really isn't any more expensive than the 9G Kuro's were when they were new, in fact it's likely that the 55 inch B6 will be cheaper than any of the 9g Kuro's were new at the time.

Most of those kuro owners wanted to upgrade from the 50" size and they have the red tint. Just like your 5080 does. I have yet to read about anybody selling a properly functioning kuro. There's just no way i would give up my 2700+ hours 151 that's in tip top shape for any TV right now. It's not like i would do that either way. It would just go into another room.

Not to deny that the LG OLED is a good TV. I just feel there's really no rush for me to do so. I would rather wait till other manufacturers are making them anyway and i have more options to weigh each performances.

I wouldn't call my 5080 a red tint... it's more like a (very slight) purple tint. The pictures I've seen of red tinted KURO's on AVS and Google looks way worse and pretty different than mine. It bothered me for the first few weeks but it honestly I cannot notice it unless I have a full black screen in complete or near complete darkness. I'm not even sure what I've seen is even the same thing as the red tint issue.

But anyways I get what you are saying. You want to see OLED be a little more perfected before you go into it. I personally am not totally crazy about the idea of giving up a Pioneer TV for and LG one, regardless of the display tech. Pioneer probably has the best build quality ever on a flat panel, where as LG is not terrible build wise but pretty damn average. Still, Ive been dreaming about OLED for years and it seems LG has got most of the problems to the point where they have very little effect on most normal content. I am also interested in WCG and HDR and KURO's cant do that

Any recommendations for a long time Kuro user?

As with most, black level is most important to me. At this point, I am considering getting a 65" and wall mounting it, but 55" is still on the table for me. It would be in an open living room and used daily for normal TV watching (Directv) and standard bluray watching. About 12' away from main watching position. My budget is flexible, but I would like to be around $2-3K. I know that puts me in a rough spot for the 2016 LG OLED's and especially 65".

I'm not sure what to think of LG's Prime 4K UHD's? I've also looked at the 65UF9500 UHD, but am not sure how it would compare with the 2015 or 2016 LG OLED's.
