Default How to clean steelbook?

Hello guys and girls,

I have a steelbook that has glue on the front cover, and its driving me nuts. Would it hurt the steelbook if I use water to clean it of?

Thanks.

if its just sticky residue, just use a piece of tape to get rid of it

if that doesnt work, you can try water but im not sure if it will cause rust in the long term

i have used acetone before to clean, and it worked great. acetone evaporates quickly and doesnt leave any grease, like wd-40 does

Water and soap won't hurt the SteelBook, but it may not pull off the glue very well. If you don't have the original sticker that left the glue there, I normally have great results with using another piece of tape (i.e. duct tape) to repeatedly "dab" the glue to pull it off. Failing that I will pull out the "Goo Gone".

LOL! Thanks guys!

I tried using a soft cloth and water and it did wipe most of the marks. However, if I put the steelbook near a light I can see the clue marks still their LOL! Just not with the white sticker mark.

;(

I use just water and my finger. Just rub your went finger back and forth on the spot (without pressing down) and the residue will come off eventually.

I do the same thing but I use water with soap and it works fine for me.

A friend of mine said he has tried vinegar and it works great too. It leaves no stains or glue marks, though the drawback is.. you wouldn't want a sour-smelling steelbook now, would you?

Has anyone tried goo-gone on steelbooks?

Works great on DVD cases for removing adhesives completely, but can sometimes lift ink when removing stickers from a slipcover or paper coverart. Wondering if it would life colors from the steelbook

FYI.... I would NOT use acetone on painted metal, unless you want that spot to fade. It desolves paint quite well.

That is good to know. Acetone is pretty powerful stuff, so I would just use a bit of caution if on was to use it. Maybe a q-tip?

Avoid any water contact on Steelbooks, especially matte ones. This WILL cause rust at a later stage. It eats away very slowly.

For sticky residue, try a drop of lighter fluid on a Q-tip. Don't take my word for it...test it first on a damaged steelbook if you have one.

I have a couple (Hancock/ Inglourious Basterds CA and Angels and Demons) that somehow got damp and now there is rust on the top edges of them.
I believe this may have been caused by using surgical alcohol for cleaning that contained a moderate to high water content.

I use goo gone on slipcovers, but I don't know what it would do to a steelbook.

Here is the contents of it.

Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated light < 95 64742-47-8
Tripropylene glycol methyl ether 1 – 10 25498-49-1
Citrus extracts blend 1 – 10 94266-47-4 / 8028-48-6

Yeah he's right the matte finish ones will rust eventually if you use water on them. My hands sweat, it's a medical issue, and the only matte finish one I own (the rest I own have a gloss finish and are fine, they are in perfect condition) is now a bit rusty in some areas.
