Default Nintendo To Produce Movies Based On It’s Classic Game Series.

The news, which was first published in Japan’s Asahi Shimbun was translated to (English-language) social media through a series of Tweets by Kyle McLain (via Gamespot):

According to an interview with Kimishima in today's Asahi Shinbun, Nintendo is getting into the movie business, Nintendo is looking at a production system where "we can do as much as we can ourselves." Nintendo isn't interested in producing live-action movies, with Kimishima citing the 1993 Super Mario film as the main reason why the company is leaning toward "anime-type content Kimishima also says that Nintendo would like to have it's first movie ready within the next 2-3 years.

I'd rather they just teamed up with Pixar for a Super Mario Bros film than trying to make one themselves.

That would be nice, but Nintendo is extremely protective of their properties, wanting to control virtually all aspects. That's the main reason no movies have been made since the mid-'90s; everyone outside the company wants to offer their own take and Nintendo won't play ball.

Agreed, and John Woo actually had the rights in the early 2000s. But they expired when he and Nintendo couldn't agree on the film's direction.

I don't really see what could be done with the Punch-Out series in terms of story, but Castlevania has lots of potential. A film based on the series was stuck in development hell (pardon the pun) for many years, but eventually fizzled out.

Ever see boxing movies? They are usually good.

Never been a huge sports-movie fan in general, though Field of Dreams is a longtime fave. I did see all the Rocky films, but didn't care for them much.

How about something like Super Smash Bros. and make it like the Avengers. I'm sure it would make a lot of money and plenty of sequels.

I think Nintendo characters fighting each other would get a bit repetitive after a while.

They make some of the best video games around so there is no reason to think they can't do it with movies too. Exciting news!

That makes no sense.

Personally I'm pretty tired of that company flogging the same franchises for 30 years, and hardly need to see them do so in animated form.

So because you disagree it makes no sense? Glad to see opinions matter.

Anyway in MY opinion they make some of the best games around. I don't really care what you want or agree with. I find it exciting news and think they can make great movies being fully in control.

I think what they're saying is that making good games doesn't necessarily translate into making good movies. This is probably even more true when many of the games themselves have thinner storylines than a gold leaf.

I get what he's saying. If it was live action I'd agree. However CG cutscenes in movies are telling a story in animated form. If they can pull off CG cutscenes they can pull off a movie. Something like Metroid could be great.

No, it makes no sense because because one fact in no way follows from the other.

Keith Richards is one of the best rock songwriters around.
Therefore, Keith Richards would make great video games.
Logic!

Thanks for the amazing input. Obviously a song writer making a video game is exactly the same as a video game company who crafts stories in animated video game form. Gee I can't see any possible correlation between an animated video game and animated movie written and made by the same company.
