Default Planet Earth runtimes issue

Can someone clarify why the runtime for the english version of planet earth is 420 minutes while the American version is 550 minutes ???
To add more confusion, the DVD version is 660 minutes ???????

I can't understand why BBC can't put extras in high-def version.

The BBC edition is 530 minutes.

The American, Discovery Channel edition is 480.

The American version is shorter because of footage that they originally cut to allow for commercials on the Discovery Channel broadcast.

I don't know about the DVD version, but it definitely does have extras that both the BBC and Discovery Channel HD version don't have.

There is some explanation to this in the Movie section of the HD Digest Review

Discovery Channel makes no sense to me. First they localize the show with Sigourney Weaver and then they leave the show chopped for home release? I'm just glad I've got the BBC version.
