Default Disney Blu Ray

How come some of the Disney cartoon classics have 3-D versions, like Lion King but others like Little Mermaid and Aladdin do not?

It's Disney being stupid. And it only happened in the US.
Many of us miss out on 3D releases because Disney USA decided not to release them.

Fortunately, the UK and Asian versions are region free. I got it from there.

Does 3D make a difference on the old 2D movies?

Toy Story and Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc are different because the graphics are so much better and 3D makes a huge difference. But what about the old 2D movies?

I haven't actually purchased any of the old cartoons in 3D. Reviews have been very positive though.

As for the difference, YMMV. I usually try to go for native 3D releases and not converted material.

How do you know which ones are native 3D?
I assume all the older movies are converted 3D.

Is there generally a good site other than Amazon to get good deals on Disney classics in blu ray? Black friday? Or do these never go on sale?

The Little Mermaid was converted to 3D and a BD3D was released for it.

Depends on the film. Some are mediocre, some are surprisingly strong. If you read the 3D reviews you will typically find that Disney takes a pretty conservative line in creating 3D Effects compared to Dreamworks or some of the other companies

I guess my question -- how could an animated release have native 3D? They all have to be conversions of one type or another since it doesn't really exist.

Other than Amazon? Odd assumption that Amazon has good deals on Disney Blurays. If you are a US or Canadian resident and want at least 6-10 items then the Disney Movie Club is by far the best way to build a collection if you want them new. See the long thread in the deals thread.

Black Friday sales often will have some usually newer Disney releases for $10 ea though only 2-3 each year
I don't think 3D Blu Rays are included.

Disney Movie Club offers 3D Blu-rays to their members but I haven't seen anyone do a cost analysis of 3D purchases to see if DMC is overall cheaper.

And yes, nearly all Black Friday sales for Disney titles are 2D only. Warner seems to be one of the few consistently allowing BF reductions on 3D releases every year.

This is one of the reasons they don't release the 3D versions. People aren't willing to pay for them. It's cyclical. If you want to see more releases, buy the ones they release without waiting for big discounts.

I always go with the reverse of your strategy in a way. If they release a movie that was 3d in theaters and don't release it on blu-ray then I don't buy the 2d version or I only will buy the 2d version at bargain basement discounts. Basically if they want to play hard ball and withhold stuff then I will withhold my money also.

I know my price points on 3d vs 2d I dont know how they compare to others but right now for example I will buy the jungle book for 5 to 10$ come black friday. I would have payed 20 dollars day 1 for it in 3d but if they pushed for more then that I would have again waited. They would have made 10 to 15 dollars more and it would have been at release vs delayed but only if they are not to greedy. Money is their to be made with 3d releases its just not Rockefeller money. Also they already made the films in 3d they even did the encode for other countries. Almost everything in a 3d release is already a sunk cost so it should not even be part of the equation. giving 3d to the us is basically just the cost of the disc if they are going to do the encode anyway.

Trying to get 28 dollars for duds like good dinosaur 3d is just foolish but they probably would have gotten it from me for star wars. Part of the problem Disney has is that it just takes ages for the duds to fall to a proper price as they price gold and shit at the exact same price come release day.
