Default Commericial theaters lag behind home theaters

A minor debate surrounding UHD-BD has been whether movies should be viewed in high dynamic range when they didn't receive an HDR release in theaters. I don't buy into that for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the scarcity of HDR capable cinemas in the first place. In short, we find ourselves in a place where the capabilities of home theater are vastly superior to the quality in your typical multiplex. So why would any of us want to dumb-down our home viewing experience to match the limitations of commercial cinema?

HDguru just posted a great interview with Hanno Basse, who is the chairman of the UHD Alliance and the Chief Technology Officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment. He likewise feels commercial cinemas need to step up their game, and fast, to match the quality we're enjoying on UHD-BD. He provides some terrific insight into the considerations of film making in the age of HDR, and the artistic compromises directors are making because of the limitations in commercial theaters...

Quote:
because our distribution [into digital theaters] is not in high dynamic range, you can’t do everything you would want to do in HDR, because you can’t do something at the expense of the theatrical distribution.
Well worth the read...
