Default I've been out of this for a while, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, can I get an explanation?

I've been out of the game for a while. I have a good system for me, I'm satisfied with what I have, but, I've recently been thinking of an upgrade in the receiver dept., seeing as how mine is 4 years old.

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, are these found on 1080p blu-ray discs, or are these new formats for 4K discs? Because if it's for 4K discs, I'm not interested. I don't see a 4K TV being in my future, as I just got my 70" Sharp a year ago.

So, if I upgrade my receiver, keeping in mind I'm not changing my TV for a while, would an Atmos/DTS:X receiver be something I should look at, or should I wait, as the tech should improve down the line.

Thanks for the list. Interesting how it will be on standard BDs, but the 5.1 lossless will be the core audio. Thanks Opips3.

Looks like, with all my google research, Atmos and DTS:X is not for me. But all BDs will still have the core 5.1 or 7.1 lossless on them, no matter what, so I can keep what I have, which I'm happy with, and look for a cheaper receiver that doesn't need to have the extra decoding built in.

I will say this, sometimes, not knowing is bliss. because let me tell you, after I set up my HT for ATMOS/DTS:X and listened to Blu-ray's with ATMOS/DTS:X audio, and listened to regular lossless Blu-ray movies utilizing DSU/Neural:X I will never be able to go back or go without knowing what my brain and ears know now.

actual experience of a thing always beats out research of what a thing is about; try to find a HT ATMOS/DTS:X setup and give it an experience (notice I didn't say "a listen" ) that's all I've got to say about that. good luck buddy.

You're probably right. Ignorance is bliss. I have a Marantz SR6007 that is still performing well, and I can't justify $1800CAD+Tax for an Atmos/DTS:X receiver right now, especially considering I just got back to work, and don't have much savings. Besides, the wife won't let me put speakers on the wall in the living room. WAF on that, no go. I'd have to develop the basement, and I don't have that in the cards right now. I'll stick with 5.1 for now.

I think it's fair to ask. For a start, you could watch this video by Dolby, explaining Dolby Atmos in cinemas.
This debut in cinemas in 2012, and it has made its way to home theater since 2014.

In short, it's the implementation of a 3D surround space, using an array of overhead speakers and an alternative home theater solution using upfiring speakers to reflect off your ceiling.

Dolby pioneered this with Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X followed suit a couple of years later with similar implementation.

On the home theater front, the number of Blu-ray titles and UHD BD with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X is growing. Although it's worth noting the amount of Dolby Atmos BD/UHD BD titles easily outnumbers those with DTS:X. And there seems to be a growing practice among studios to include Dolby Atmos only in their UHD BD release, omitting the soundtrack in regular BD.

This is a very optional upgrade, almost like 3D and 4K. All Dolby Atmos soundtracks come with Dolby TrueHD 7.1 core. So you're not losing out if you already have an established 5.1 or 7.1 home theater.

Hope this helps.

Definitely Dolby Atmos. Auro 3D is extremely rare in Blu-rays. None of them from US.

You may consider dtsX as a secondary format to invest. But again, the number of dtsX titles isn't very encouraging. Dolby Atmos is more than sufficient.
