The title may be confusing, but I don't know how to describe this question in a title. Basically Jeff Bridges won his Academy Award for what most would say was not his BEST performance. Same goes for Martin Scorsese. So what Actors and Directors or even Cinematographers won their award, but not for their best project and what was their best?

Kate Winslet winning for The Reader. Should have won for Sense and Sensibilty, Little Children, or Eternal Sunshine.
Joan Fontaine for Suspicion. Should have won for Rebecca. Gloria Grahame for The Bad and the Beautiful. Should have won for The Big Heat. Many others but those are off the top of my head. |

I was fine with this. He did have a hard role. It was challenging. He deserved an Oscar. "Why not for this" was my thought. He has been needing one for years. I didn't think Wolf of Wall Street was all that much of a challenge for an actor. I actually thought some of the performances in The Big Short deserved more merit than DiCaprio in WoWS.

Challenging for grunting a lot and sleeping inside a horse's carcass. He was already due for an award so the Academy felt forced to pay his debt. I feel he provided a much better acting range in WoWS.

Nic Cage didn't win for Wild at Heart or Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. That being said, this isn't exactly an analogous case to many of the above, as Leaving Las Vegas is a fantastic performance that deserved an Oscar in and of itself anyways; also, Bad Lieutenant came out after Leaving Las Vegas.
De Niro didn't win for Once Upon a Time in America or Casino; again, though, not strictly analogous as he already had some at the times. Pacino.... 'nuff said. |
