Spotted this Triple Feature "Killer Sci-fi" set on Amazon. It includes Creature (1985), Incident at Raven's Gate (1988),and Slipstream (1989).

I haven't heard of SLG Entertainment, but I'm very cautiously optimistic about this release, as I really want an HD widescreen version of Creature to own (I think the director sold DVDs of a widescreen version a few years ago?). I've heard of Slipstream, which sounds like a fun, low budget movie, so if the transfers are good for and this isn't some PD nonsense, I'm in!

I wouldn't order this unless I read positive reviews.

Kind of amusing that there's already a gushing review on Amazon. When the author was asked how they saw it so early they said "I Got a Review Copy for our Magazine, Movies Models and Music".

The sad thing is that we STILL don't have a legit home video release of Creature/Titan Fin that isn't the pulled DVD release William Malone put out himself.
I want this silly movie rescued from the public domain tentacles, dammit! |

I'd like to revisit Slipstream. Years ago I bought it on VHS when I stumbled across it at my grocery store of all places, in a small videotape bin they used to have. But it was recorded in LP mode for some reason and the quality was terrible, which I think really diminished any ability to enjoy it. Solid cast, though, and a terrific Elmer Bernstein score.

Having loved Raven's Gate for so many years, with a poor copy, I'm buying this. Hopefully the transfer will be decent, with a correct and consistent aspect ratio, not compressed oddly or, worse, a re-sized nightmare. Also, it would be nice to have Creature and Slipstream which are both pretty decent, for what they are, good offerings in their subgenres.
As to Raven's Gate, it is pretty much the only film I've ever seen of a unique sub-group. Most alien encounter films have actual, physical, aliens in them and most are either high budget scream fests with endless gore and chills or space ships or, at the other end, are low budget dialogue heavy cheese fests like you see made for cable television and direct to video releasing. Raven's is unique in that it fits in the middle, with more budget spent on people and some effects but not so much that you know the actors and have seen every film they've ever made. The dialogue feels real, no one talks too much, not everything has to be explained aloud, and there are no apologies. It is very Australian in attitude and in the pacing, with a plot that doesn't dwell. People move forward, rather than moping and discussing everything to death. It is a slow build, designed to allow you to feel like you really know the characters by the end of the film, so it isn't for everyone and, where people in my family diverge from me, the characters are meant to be real, not overly likeable or cutesy as is the style these days, so you won't like it if you need characters to be highly moral, religious or, basically, anything above half-way decent. I'm old enough to miss 80s cinema and this film encapsulates all that I loved in it. Does anyone have any experience, at all, with this distributor? I have never even heard of them and don't know anyone who has. |

SLG Entertainment claims to already have this available on their online store. I was tempted to take the plunge but noticed they also had an "HD" rental of Slipstream for $2. Sorry to say its the same 4:3 P&S SD master that has been on every DVD release of the movie I've seen (they all open up in wide in order to show the full title and then crop in afterwards). They put the rental up in August, while there is a chance they got a better master since then I am not going to gamble $20 to find out.

MGM appears owns the uncut version (The Titan Find) while the shorter Creature release version fell into PD. Malone, not aware that MGM owns the copyright to The Titan Find cut, released the original uncut version and advertised it under the original title, then got threatened later on by the powers that be and withdrew further plans for a HD release version.
This company may not know the rights differences and may face troubles from MGM or Bill Malone for the version used on the triple feature. However, since they're advertising it under the Creature release title while the actual version is the uncut Titan Find version, who knows what will happen. |

So I just got my copy! Amazon.ca shipped 2 months early for some reason. Anyways, here's the lowdown. This is a BD-R, as expected. None of these transfers look like anything more than upscaled DVD rips. Incident at Raven's Gate is anamorphic wide-screen, Slipstream on NON-anamorphic but still wide-screen and probably looks the worst of the bunch. And Creature is...
Anamorphic wide-screen and looks pretty darn decent! On screen title is The Titan Find, so if I had to venture a guess, they got ahold of one of those dvds from William Malone and ripped that transfer. |

I sold off my Malone "Titan Find" DVD for $300+ a few years back, so if this release is simply an upscale of that release, that's enough for me for the moment as it doesn't look like an official remaster is coming anytime soon, if ever.
