Default How many HDMI inputs do I really need? Also, other questions?

I have a Mits rptv with 1 HDMI input and a PS3. I am looking to upgrade my reciever and don't have that much too spend. I keep hearing about receivers with 1, 2 or 3 HDMI inputs. How many do I really need and why would I need more than one??

Thanks!

2 at minimum, 3 would be optimal.

If you have a HD DVR/Sat Receiver that's one HDMI

If you use HDMI for your PS3 that's two

If you intend to connect a computer to the TV via HDMI (more common option now), thats three

If you don't have a current 3rd HDMI need, you would being doing yourself a big favor by future proofing your set-up.

Then there are always HDMI swithces.......

I have 6 HDMI inputs for 4 of my HDTV's due to 5x1 switchers & they come in very handy you could have 10 or 15 or even 20! just depends on how many HDMI inputs your HDTV has & how many switchers you want LOL!

What is video conversion. I saw an Onkyo 505 that has HDMI inputs. But, the 605 has video conversion. Thanks!

3 is a bare minimum to be future proof. (1) HD player (2) HD Game system (3) Cable (Satellite), is a quick example where you could easily use 3 HDMI inputs.

That is upconversion of composite or component inputs through an hdmi output upto 1080p.

Generally....2 inputs would be ideal.

1) HD Reciever
2) HD DVD Player

In my case, i would love to have 3...as i have both HD formats. So my cable box is connect by component.

The 505 cannot process HDMI audio, you would need an Optical cable for audio. Its not even worth looking at. (605 or higher )

You mean 1.)HD DVR & 2.) Blu-ray player! Buy a HDMI switcher & have 10+ HDMI things hooked up at once

My bad.....i should have specified.

What i meant was HD DVD = a high definition player (meaning either one)

I have 3 HDMI sources, my upconverting DVD player, my Cable box/DVR, and my PS3. I only have 2 inputs on my TV. My reciever, though, is capable of taking two inputs and has only one output to the tv and it handles switching for me so I end up with one extra cable but it solves my problem of not enough inputs. So, 2 minimum, 3 ideal is probably the most likely answer.
