Default Yurikuma Arashi (a series by Kunihiko Ikuhara)

Far off in space, the asteroid Kumaria blew up, sending bits and pieces to rain down on Earth. For reasons unknown, this causes all the bears ("kuma" in Japanese) to simultaneously rise up and begin attacking humans. Finally, a giant "Wall of Severance" was built to divide them from each other and end their ceaseless war and hatred. In the human world, at Wuthering Heights Academy, Kureha and Sumika are friends who've fallen in love. When they find a lily blooming in their favorite flower bed, their eyes meet...and all at once the Bear Alarm starts ringing, signalling that the human world is under attack.

Ummm, thanks? This is a random thread. I liked the series. Some don't. I think we need to support the dwindling number of truly unique voices in the anime industry--Ikuhara is one of them.

The reviewer at DVDTalk gave this series 1 1/2 stars and advised people to "Skip It."

I was surprised. As a longtime fan of Kunihiko Ikuhara's work, I absolutely loved this series. The reviewer's main complaint seems to be that it isn't funny. I wouldn't categorize it as a comedy, although there are certainly humorous moments. I guess not everyone appreciates Ikuhara's brand of absurd humor, which functions as some relief to the more serious themes.

Some people are just lame. I mean it was no Penguindrum or Adolescence of Utena but it was great. The BD came out in Australia about a week ago and I'm going to rewatch it with the dub (wasn't huge on what I heard of the simuldub but it's an excuse to revisit it). My dad ended up watching episode one with me when I had it on, wasn't what he expected and that's BEFORE the story begins unfolding

Yurikuma is a great kind of palate cleanser for watching anime. Yeah it's got the familiar cute girls and fantasy elements but the experience of watching what Ikuhara does with those familiar tropes is so out there and different from everything else, if you're ever in an anime rut it's a great way to get out.

As necessary as any thread for a series I would guess. You don't like it, report it to a mod and maybe they'll share your opinion and delete it.
