Default Audio options on Blu-ray movies

Hey. I didn't know whether to place this in this section or the blu-ray movies section. I'm just curious about something. So I was just watching the movie Batman (1989) and the audio selections put DD 5.1 as the first option and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 as the second option followed by other language options. I've noticed this on other blu-rays as well like the Dark Knight trilogy and Pirates of the Caribbean movies. So when I play the movie I'm just playing DD 5.1 instead of DolbyHD or DTS-HD. I don't realize this until later on in the movie if I select "display" on my remote to check remaining time. I have a Sony BDP-5500 player. Is there a way to set my player so that HD audio is the default?? My receiver is a Yamaha HTR-6063 which is HD audio compatible. Thanks for any assistance.

I have always gone into the setup & selected or made sure the audio track is what I wanted before the movie When you have HD sound tracks over DD 5.1 then choose them

So there is no way to preset it? I just have to make sure to select it at the beginning of the movie? Why would they make blu-ray movies and not have the HD audio as the first and default option?

back in the day, not all Blu-ray players could support both (or either) lossless codec, so, some studios didn't want people to think something was wrong with the disc (or the player) so they defaulted them to the lossy core. unfortunately, this authoring continues with some studios. even though, I don't believe there is a Blu-ray player made in the last 5 years that don't support both the major lossless codecs.

I'm like you, they should always default to the lossless audio and let the player determine that it can or can't play it. players will simply default to the lossy core if they don't support lossless audio codecs.

Yup. This is what happened with older releases. As a result, it has become a habit for me to ALWAYS go into the audio settings prior to watching the film and making certain that the HD audio track was selected. This was particularly bad with Warner Bros. releases that started playing the film right away as most people would just automatically assume that everything was set to highest quality and wouldn't have that menu screen to remind them to check settings.

Hmm okay. Thanks for the replies. I'm just starting out in home theatre. I've had blu-ray for a few years now but until now only used a sound bar or basic stereo. Here is my starter set. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I just remembered something. I had noticed some of my movies like the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels have the HD audio track labeled as LPCM. Does it mean it's not true HD audio? On the back of the case the Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD logo is present. I'm just curious why they'd label it as LPCM in the settings.

LPCM is uncompressed audio and is HD audio.

DTS-HD MA & Dolby TrueHD are lossless formats and also HD audio.

Basically, PCM offers uncompressed audio at a fixed bit rate but at the cost of space. To maximize space, disc authorers will use the original uncompressed audio and encode it in DTS MA/TrueHD. Nothing is being lost, DTS-MA/TrueHD are working like a folder to hold that information. The benefit is variable bit rate with less space being used on the disc.

But in essence it's the same. Like for example on a CD you have the uncompressed file of a song but if you rip into Apple Lossless it's a smaller file size but the sound quality is essentially the same.

One thing I've always been curious about. How do I get my receiver to display "blu-ray" or "Dolby TrueHD" or "DTS-HD" and such on my receiver display panel? I can't figure that out. I have a Yamaha HTR-6063.

Are you connected between the player and the receiver with HDMI? And do you have the Blu-ray player plugged into HDMI 1?

"Blu-ray" is not an audio option, but that can display as the desired input if you have the cable plugged into the Blu-ray input on the receiver. If you have it plugged in elsewhere, you can probably relabel it somewhere in the receiver's setup program.

I can't tell from a photo of the front panel of your receiver whether it displays Dolby True HD or DTS HD. I think it does, but can't tell for sure. Check your user manual. If you're using the HDMI input and this doesn't display and it should, you've got something configured improperly either in the player or in the receiver.

This is my receiver here. http://ca.yamaha.com/en/products/aud..._c/?mode=model

I know that blu-ray is not an audio option. But I see pics of these receivers and many times it will show it with "blu-ray" on the display. Or will show "DTS-HD" or "Dolby TrueHD" on the display. Some like the Pioneer have the logo on the display which will light up when the signal is present. My Blu-ray player is plugged into HDMI1 which is labelled BD/DVD underneath the input on the back. It's not a big deal if it doesn't say it. I thought it would be cool. My AppleTV is plugged into HDMI2 but for some reason when I turn it on it will switch to HDMI2 fine but will then switch to an AV input. I'll still have video but no audio until I hit HDMI2 on the remote.

Do you have player set to output bitstream or PCM?

PCM means the player does the decoding and is sending a PCM signal to the receiver.

Bitstream means the player sends the signal to the receiver for decoding.

I believe it is PCM. But I'll check later this evening when I'm home from work. Does it matter which one does the decoding?

I don't think your player displays the DD or DTS logos, HDMI is the only logo it outputs, but if you press INFO on your remote you should be able to display the audio information. Just cycle through until it displays.

I mean that it would display in the main portion of the display (#11 in the pic). Kinda like showing track info for a song.

They should if you cycle through the display with the INFO button. You should have Blu-ray in the top part of text and the audio in the #11 section.

The other issue is the use of Cinema DSP, if the sound is direct and not put through the Yamaha Surrounds modes it might change the display. I think you need to press STRAIGHT to do so.

In the top left of section 11 of the display it says "info" or "HDMI" when I cycle through with the "info" button. But it will say either "DTS" or "Dolby TrueHD" in the main section. My blu-ray player is either "auto" or "PCM" in the audio settings. No "bitstream" option.
