Criterion Black Narcissus (1947) / The Red Shoes (1948)

I have just read the announcement that Criterion will be releasing these two great Powell & Pressburger movies here in the U.S. in July.

Although they come months later than their UK counterparts, I am very much hopeful that the wait will be worth it!!

I'm guessing the transfer will be different to the ITV-DVD releases in the UK. The UK transfer for the Red Shoes is supposed to be amazing, Black Narcissus not quite as good. I haven't actually seen either, but I would like to.

I actually ordered the UK "Black Narcissus" a while back, just haven't had time to watch it.

But I would imagine Criterion always does its own transfers unless it can't for some technical reason - however the source material is likely to be the same at least for the restored version of "The Red Shoes" .

It is nothing short of mesmerizing. One of the best Criterion's of the year, along with Black Narcissus.

I got both of them during the B&N Criterion sale, however I've been a bit busy and haven't had time to watch them yet...

Are you talking about “Black Narcissus or “The Red Shoes”? I own “The Red Shoes” myself, I quite enjoyed it. Why would you ask if a a 35mm, Technicolor 3-strip film from 1948 is compareable to a 65mm Panavision film from 1962? That’s like asking if All That Heaven Allows is compareable to Sicario 4K.

It is a very good movie. Nowhere near Lawrence of Arabia picture quality, but still very good 3-strip Technicolor look, but from an interpositive, not the negative.

Oh, I thought it was a good comparison given that they are both very old classics

Why were these two movies bunched together in one thread? They don't even come as a bundle I don't think

I did. Still can't find any good reason why these two titles shouldn't have their own threads each to avoid confusion

Are these the best UK editions? How do they compare to Criterion Collection editions? They are a whole lot cheaper that's for sure!

What confusion would that be?

That's uncalled for. I simply asked about this movie and also asked what the difference is between these two movies and the UK editions.

And yes it would help to have a thread per movie to avoid confusion or misunderstandings
