Default Roadies - Cameron Crowe, JJ Abrams

Quote:
This would have to be truly awful not to get a series order. CameronCroweJJ Abrams’ Bad Robot is on the verge of announcing production of a Pay TV pilot for a Showtime series created by Cameron Crowe and run by Winnie Holzman. It’s an ensemble comedy set during a U.S. rock tour and tentatively titled Roadies. Crowe will direct the pilot before the end of the year. It is his first foray into television. This Christmas, the writer-director-Oscar winner’s romantic comedy film starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Murray will be released by Sony.

I love Crowe and the idea sounds great so I'm excited for this.

First trailer:

Quote:
Don't miss the premiere of Roadies on Sunday June 26th at 10PM ET/PT on SHOWTIME. Roadies gives an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of “roadies” who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way. The music-infused ensemble comedy series chronicles the rock world through the eyes of music's unsung heroes and puts the spotlight on the backstage workers who put the show on the road while touring the United States for a successful arena-level band. Starring Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino and Imogen Poots.

Rafe Spall, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Peter Cambor, Colson Baker a.k.a. Machine Gun Kelly and Ron White star in the ensemble cast. Luis Guzman, Jacqueline Byers, Finesse Mitchell, Branscombe Richmond and Tanc Sade guest star. Created, written, executive produced and directed by Oscar® winner Cameron Crowe and executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Winnie Holzman.

Just watching the first episode, it's very Cameron Crowe...whether thats good or bad, depends on your views of Crowe, I'll keep watching for now as I'm a sucker for Crowe, except We Bought a Zoo.

I've appreciated how the series improves with each episode, but I keep waiting for Phil to come back.
Tonight's episode with Lindsey Buckingham and Rainn Wilson was almost perfect.
It still feels like some of the music choices are forced or just don't quite fit with the scene, but the live performances are great.

I never wanted to see Rainn Wilson's butt. Thanks Roadies for showing me...need some brain bleach. Other than that it was the best episode yet. Rainn Wilson on an acid trip was gut bustingly funny.

I don't like to come in a thread and cut a show down but you asked so here's my criticism: IMO Luke Wilson and Carla Gugino are terribly miscast. I think the show is most interesting when neither of these characters is on-screen. I know others will disagree completely and that's ok; we all have our own opinions and what counts is what we believe. So far I have watched every episode but I'm barely hanging on.

Well, I have to disagree. I thought the chemistry between them was great.

P.S.:
I just love that the show looks AND feels like a modern version of Almost Famous.

And that's what I like about this forum - people can disagree agreeably and choose for themselves. Thanks.

Agreed. Phil is such a colorful character and to see his backstory unfold along with the rise of Lynyrd Skynyrd was a roller coaster ride of emotion.
Seeing that footage from the Knebworth Fair Fest with The Stones made me want to be there so bad. Then again, it seems everytime I see archive footage from a Knebworth Fair Concert and I feel like I should have been there. But of course, in most instances I wasn't even born yet, Haha

It's ridiculous that critics are allowed to rate a whole season based on one episode (Rotten Tomatoes).

Well, the audience really likes the show (77%).

Here's an excerpt from a positive new review (FORBES). This critic actually watched 8 episodes:

"I like “Roadies.” There, I said it. I like it a lot. It’s grown on me, and is more enjoyable with each episode that is released. I hope Showtime renews it."

“Roadies” has not received the attention it deserves, in part, because critics found the pilot and opening episodes easy to dismiss.

What I’ve come to enjoy about “Roadies” and what I look forward to each episode are those moments when a character, often Luke Wilson, launches into a rap about some arcane moment of rock history, such as Graham Parsons influence in bringing country into rock, or Led Zeppelin’s early beginnings as a blues band. The most recent episode was basically a long monologue by Road Warrior Phil about his history with and love for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Beyond that each episode features good music from performers from Lyndsey Buckingham, John Mellencamp, Halsey, Kingsreich, andthe Heart and the Hunter. Crowe continues to have impeccable musical taste and it shows throughout the show. Be it the song of the day, or some fragment of song, hummed, sung or karaoke’d by the crew or on the bus. In this and other ways, pleasures abound on “Roadies.”

Wilson and Carla Gugino lead a cohesive and completely credible cast of misfit production techs including Keisha Castle-Hughes, Pete Cambor, Ron White, Luis Guzman, Colson Baker and Finesse Mitchell."

**** You Phil!
Don't You ****ing leave us again!
Get up and keep roaming White Buffalo!

So many good things were starting to happen too.
Even with the band unofficially breaking up, true love appeared to be recognized between Bill and Shelli and then Kelly and Reg. I even started to appreciate Natalie's stalker romanticism of the band.

For Phil (You'll only get it if you've seen the second to last episode)
