Was fortunate to see this one at an advanced screening and honestly wish this was the pop celebrity film people were going gaga for (no pun intended). Also an amazing showcase for Natalie Portman who gets to play one of the richest characters of her filmography to date. The climactic concert sequence alone is definitely worth the price of admission.

If not for FIRST REFORMED, it would be the best film of 2018. Certainly not a consensus opinion that it's not a good film. It's a great film.

Just came back from the theater. Natalie Portman's performance is wonderful, as usual. The concert part was really bad, though. Overall, the movie is solid, but the ending could have been better.

I think everyone commenting on the concert portion being bad is kind of missing the point though, I think it's meant to be mediocre. It goes along with the intentionally banal and meaningless giant words projected on the screen behind her throughout. Portman and Corbet talked about this, he studied a bunch of pop concerts to create this one:

I took it more as a commentary on modern pop concerts than one that actually intended to be mindblowingly good.

I don't think she's even intended to be the most spectacular or intelligent person, this interview with Portman talks about how Celeste was meant to be complicated:

The whole movie felt like social satire/commentary, some of which worked for me, some of which didn't, but I respected how audacious it was.

Since this was a Neon film I was hoping it'd play at my local Alamo Drafthouse but nope. Sucks to wait until March to see this.
