Default 'Five Against the Bullet' - Joe Carnahan & Jackie Chan

Quote:
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura Says Bruce Willis Will Likely Star in FIVE AGAINST THE BULLET

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is one of the more prolific producers in Hollywood. In addition to producing the Transformers franchise and Red, di Bonaventura also produced the upcoming thriller Man on a Ledge. Our correspondent Sheila Roberts was able to speak with di Bonaventura during a roundtable conversation at the press junket for Man on a Ledge and while we’ll have the full conversation up closer to the film’s release, we wanted to share a few tidbits with you today. In addition to confirming development on Transformers 4, the producer revealed that Bruce Willis is likely to star in the shoot-em up Five Against the Bullet.

When asked what other projects the producer has coming up, he was quick to discuss Five Against the Bullet:

Quote:
“There’s one called Five Against the Bullet which is really great and I think I have a shot at making a movie that will pay homage to movies like The Wild Bunch or The Magnificent Seven. It’s a hardcore shoot-em up with men of questionable morality coming up against maybe their humanity as a result of it. I’m really excited about that because those movies are really hard to make because they can veer into just an action picture or they can speak to you in a way that’s different, where you can get underneath the character. I aspire more to The Wild Bunch and The Magnificent Seven and hopefully we can pull it off.”
Something akin to The Wild Bunch and The Magnificent Seven is certainly a tall order, but di Bonaventura thinks he has just the man to pull it off:

Quote:
“Bruce Willis is probably going to do it. But there are five really great characters, so that’s what’s really fun. There’s actually a sixth character that is sort of a cameo that’s really interesting too. I think we’re going to be able to put together a very eclectic international cast and Sony is going to do the picture.”
While far from a confirmation, di Bonaventura and Willis worked together on Red so the two definitely have a rapport. An international cast is also an intriguing aspect and should make for a fresh actioner in a sea of generic explosion-happy pics. Hopefully we’ll hear more on the project soon as development moves forward.

So, is this going to be a western? I couldn't tell from the article because it mentions being a shoot 'em up, but then also name drops The Wild Bunch and The Magnificent Seven. Either way, as someone who just watched Last Man Standing/The Last Boy Scout double feature the last couple days, I'm definitely interested.

Who is the director for Five Against the Bullet? The producer barely matters, IMO...

Bruce Willis Chosen to Be One of ‘Five Against a Bullet’

Briefly: Lorenzo DiBonaventura, the producer that brought Bruce Willis into the G.I. Joe fold, is recruiting the actor for another action role. The movie is Five Against a Bullet, and Willis will be one of five characters acting as bodyguard for a politician. Think of it perhaps as In the Line of Fire, only with a more determined action bent.

A press release from Columbia says that the Alex Litvak script is about “a Mexican politician who, after his father is killed by a drug cartel, hires the five best bodyguards from around the world to protect him through a contentious election.”

There’s no director on the film at this point, but Columbia wants to move forward quickly, especially with Willis committed. The role doesn’t seem like any sort of surprise for the actor, and while you could argue that it’s a safe bet for Willis, I’ll take the fact that he’s got potentially more challenging gigs coming up in Moonrise Kingdom and Looper, and this might be a straightforward gig that plays directly to his established audience.

Five Against a Bullet is a title you may recognize from over the years. The Lorenzo di Bonaventura-produced action film has been in development since 2011 when around Bruce Willis was attached to star. After that iteration of the project failed to come together, director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) became attached to direct and rewrite Alex Litvak‘s (Predators) script back in 2014. The project has gained new signs of life as actor and martial arts legend, Jackie Chan, has (possibly) signed on to star in the film, which Carnahan likens to The Wild Bunch.

Tracking Board, a source that’s not always reliable, writes that Chan, known for Police Story, Drunken Master, Rush Hour, and far more, is going to star in Carnahan’s film. Here’s the synopsis: After a drug cartel murders a Mexican politician’s father, he hires five cynical bodyguards from around the world to protect him during a violent election. The Tracking Board figures Chan is playing one of the bodyguards.

Another heavy-hitting action star who once circled Five Against a Bullet was Sylvester Stallone, but it looks like this project may finally move forward with Chan in the starring role. Considering Carnahan has the Bad Boys sequels coming up, though, the action pic may have to wait.

Bonaventura has been wanting to make Five Against a Bullet for years. Here’s how the former studio head and Transformers producer once described the project when it was at Sony:

Quote:
Joe [Carnahan] we just put on a project called Five Against a Bullet, which I’ve loved for a long time. It is a tale of a group of men who have become cynical, sort of lost their sense of hope about life and the world, who are rekindled and betrayed and rekindled and betrayed in this story, and it’s got some of the coolest action and some of the greatest characters, and it’s a really fantastic action movie that I think will really grab people. And Joe’s working on it right now. … We have a great script and no doubt he’ll put a little pen to paper as well, but we’re already in great shape and Sony loves the project and no doubt we’ll start trying to figure out how to cast that.
In 2014, Carnahan presumed Five Against a Bullet would be his next movie. At the time, when it came to the actors he wanted in the film, he cast a wide net. The Narc and Stretch director told Collider he could have the star of this ensemble be a grizzled, aging lead or a young cynic, but it looks like he might be going with the former, at least with Chan’s potential role.

Back in December it was announced that Jackie Chan had signed on to star in the action thriller Five Against a Bullet, and now comes word that Traitor and Replicas helmer Jeffrey Nachmanoff will be handling directing duties.

Five Against a Bullet has been in development for several years, with Bruce Willis attached to star at one point, and Joe Carnahan coming on board to direct in 2014. Carnahan recently exited the project, but remains credited as the screenwriter, although Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Covert Affairs) are currently penning a new draft.

The film will follow five world-weary bodyguards who are hired to protect a Mexican politician running for mayor after his father is murdered by a drug cartel. Previous reports have suggested that the project could potentially spawn a franchise following the team of bodyguards through their various assignments.
