HBO has given a series order to The Righteous Gemstones, the Danny McBride-created half-hour comedy about a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work — all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

John Goodman stars the patriarch Eli Gemstone, and the order comes as his other series, ABC’s Roseanne Barr-less The Conners, preps for its season premiere October 16. The plan is to shoot Gemstones after production on Conners is complete; he is able to do both series.

McBride also is the writer, producer and director/executive producer with his Rough House Pictures partners Jody Hill and David Gordon Green. The trio were behind the McBride-starring baseball comedy Eastbound & Down, which aired on HBO from 2010-13.

McBride stars as Jesse Gemstone, Eli’s eldest son and heir to the throne who walks in his father’s shadow while simultaneously blazing his own path. He also fancies himself a maverick in the ministry game, taking what Eli has built and expanding it for a more modern audience.

Edi Patterson is set as Judy Gemstone, the daughter of Eli and Amy Leigh; Adam Devine plays Kelvin Gemstone, Eli and Amy’s youngest who’s the edgy one; Cassidy Freeman is Amber Gemstone, wife of Jesse Gemstone; Tony Cavalero is Keefe Chambers, an ex-Satanist saved by Kelvin. Tim Baltz is Judy’s fiancé BJ, and GregAlan Williams plays Martin Imari, a conservative Kenyan and Eli’s right hand.

Just like Vice Principals, this was filmed in my neck of the woods, and I was able to be an extra on several days of shooting. Can't wait.

Another home run for McBride!!

The dude (along with Jody Hill) is the king of super dark comedy!

Love Edi Patterson too. I was at Groundlings while she was on main stage and she was one of the ones i would go out of my way to see. Her and Mitch Silpa had a hilarious improv show.

Same with Tony Cavalero. He was in Sunday Company, and he had a hilarious sketch where he played an archaeologist on a rascal scooter. One of the funniest sketches I ever saw, and one day I was lucky enough to chat with him about that sketch and improv in general, and he was insanely nice and helpful, always was rooting for his success after that!

But back to the show... a great trilogy of characters for McBride. The guy just is a great character actor and again the dark comedy really is some of the best ever created. Goodman can do no wrong and Devine, I'm just a fan of that dude! Loved Workaholics and he is awesome in this.

Hopefully this is another short run show for them, 2-4 seasons, i think that is why Eastbound and Vice Principals were so genius.

If this is a comedy, it's not funny.
If this is a drama, it's not compelling.

Honestly, watching this show made me feel exactly how I feel about "mega-churches" and the people who attend them.

Finally watched season 1... loved it. Hilarious with some nice moments of heart, and the cast is fantastic.

Just watched both seasons on Foxtel in Australia. Brilliant show. Second seasons was better and funnier then the first. Shame HBO doesn’t put their comedies on Blu-Ray any longer.

On season 3 now, and it's worthy of high praise.
McBride, Green, Hill and Company are digging deep into the skeletons found in the Gemstone's closet and they masterfully lead the way into light out of the shadows with genuine heart-felt laughter and sincerity.

I'm a little behind, but I watched the third season over the previous two days and loved it!! Looking forward to what they have in store for season four.

Not sure how I'd rank the three seasons since I've given them all an 8/10. If I had to say I'd give a slight edge to S3 over S1 & S2.
