Oh man! So timely and important. This is such a well-documented and obvious problem in this country; insane that so many still choose to be ignorant or hide behind "All Lives Matter" BS. Thank you, Ava DuVernay!

13TH is powerful and thought-provoking. A timely, organized, and detailed documentary from visionary director Ava Duvernay about the racism and injustice concealed within our nation's prison system, and the the amendment that was said to have ended it all. Easily the best documentary you will see this year, or ever. Highly Recommend!

Between this and Selma Ava DuVernay is becoming a vital voice in American cinema. Cohesive, precise, and detailed storytelling of history from post-Civil War to the now filled with heartbreaking montages of the indignities suffered, and the violation of black bodies in this country. Maddening, but essential viewing for every American.

It's a documentary you pray will be seen, and spark real change in how police profile and deal with individuals, a fairer, and not racist criminal justice system, and reform in the horror show that is the prison industrial complex.

A very important documentary that will most likely not reach the very eyes that need to see it. Perfect for our modern time, the right now.

The only gripe I have with it, is it feels like 2 very different documentaries kinda smushed together. Two distinctive parts. You have the beginning, Part One, that is lots of archival footage. It goes about the history of the black community in the United States, from slavery, to emancipation, to Jim Crowe, to segregation, etc. Then you have Part Two, that deals with the prison system, from the 80's to now. I totally understand how the two parts are related, but as a film itself, they felt too distant and drastic from one another.

I really loved the first part. I learned a lot from the second part (ALEC), but didn't enjoy it too much.

Overall I enjoyed the documentary, but I think it's importance outweighs it's technical skills as a film.

Also, with all the songs they played as interludes and little buffers between footage...they missed the perfect opportunity to throw this song in.

^ I fail to see the disconnect that you mention between the two parts. But, I'm glad you saw the film, and most importantly recognize its relevance and significance.
